Engine system fault with trailer connected |
|
My 2008 disco3 2.7 diesel goes into limp mode when a trailer is connected.
This issue acurs at random moments when driving at speeds around 80+ kmph.
It happens with different trailers wich all have no led lights.
First we thought it was the leaking air suspension.
After cheking and repairing the leaks and compressor it still happens.
I don’t have a clou, there are some readings in the cars computer about can bus.
Could it have something to do with the towbar ecu?
I hope someone as any advice on this.

need to read the fault codes.
well ideally:
Clear codes
Drive with trailer and get fault.
Read codes.

If the fault codes point towards the Turbo, pop a bottle of turbo cleaner into the fuel tank.
Worked for me - no more ESF.

Thanks for the reply!
I have now taken out the towbar electric connecter including the cable, it looks a bit worn by corrosion.
Gonna put in a new set and take the car out for a long drive with a trailer.
Difficulty is that sometimes the car is ok for like 100 km ride and then suddenly the problem shows up 5 times in half an hour.
Let’s hope the limp mode stays away

Is it hills or large throttle usage that causes the fault ?

I had weird results when towing a trailer , suspension dropped & display lit up like a Christmas tree. It happened between 30 to 50 miles running . Garage ran the diagnostics and only error was steering angle sensor . Whether it was coincidence or not I don't know, but calibrating steering angle sensor cured it.
Another thought , My first new D3, Jan 05, was fitted with genuine 13pin towing electrics by the garage and afterwards occasionally dropped into limp home mode . Garage advised they had forgotten to update CCF.
Is yours a genuine LR Electrical kit

Hi,
Two lines of attack on this, one cheap one, errrr not.
Cheap:
Its trailer or tow electrics. The D3 has a terrible habit of going into limp mode and showing very expensive looking fault codes when it blows brake light bulbs (happened to me, 2 hours of extreme worry until I found that issue). Check those on the trailer and everything else. Also looks for poor connections in the socket, and the socket to the main loom basically everything-thing.
Expensive.
Turbo, I had a fault when towing up hill on cold days. This was due to the actuator being faulty and the specific load/temp conditions throwing a fault. I got this fixed under third party warranty (after some arguing). I did once see something about a software adjustment for something like this, but cant remember, I say that as my turbo was visually in good condition both vanes and actuator. hello again,
thanks for the reply.
i have had the towbar socket changed and took it out for a drive with one of our trailers.
within a few miles the car turned into limp mode again.
after reading the computer a lot of fault codes show up.
i wil place the list below.
we plugged in a trailer while the car was on the computer and directly all the fault codes show up.
strange thing is the fact that sometimes the car runs perfectly for 100 km and the suddenly it goes into limp mode for 5 times in half an hour.
we think maybe we should change the towbar's ECU.
dose anyone have expirience with that?
here are the codes:
u0401-94
u0122-87
u0138-87
u0184-87
b1a00-46
b1a87-68
u0132-87
u0140-87
u0122-87
u0138-87
u0184-87
p0101-17
i hope anyone has a clou!
thanks in advance
