Engine working hours

Hello

Does anyone know how to check the engine working hours in Disco4? Majority of car makers have this information as a part of their trip computer information, which is usually displayed on the dashboard or on the infotainment screen. I couldn't find this info on the Trip computer in 2010 Disco4 HSE.

Could this information be retrieve from the car's diagnostics? I am sure this information is accounted somewhere in the car's computer.

The main reason for getting this information is to use it for the calculation of the oil change intervals. The manufacturer's recommendations of 16K or one year is very misleading and deemed incorrect by a number of car professionals. Obviously they want to sell you very expensive new engine blocks and/or force you to purchase a new car prematurely Evil or Very Mad

I have been told by several ppl in the industry that the oil change should be based on how the car is driven and not how many miles it has done. An example is a car that spends a lot of time idling and thus has less miles (typical city drivers) should change their oil far more frequently than the drivers who do a lot of miles on motorways.

Just get yourself a suction pump (about £50.00) and change every 6 months. It's not as if
a gallon of oil is ridiculously expensive.

Better too often than not often enough.

Shouldn't you also change the oil filter with every oil change?

Maybe I'm a bit anal but I change filter and oil about 2-3 times per year. I always keep spare oil and filters in the garage for whenever the urge comes over me.

I will change the oil before winter sets in (due shortly), will do again in spring and again mid summer, before the seasonal treck to the west country.

I know it's way more than needed but I can live with the expense and it means that I am regularly under the bonnet checking stuff, just in case.

Much better than changing it too infrequently IMHO.

I have been advised that for oil grades A/B to make an oil change when you've reached no more than 400 motor running hours. For oil grades C it should be done at about 250 motor hours.

To approximate the distance in kilometers it is about: average speed(km/h) times motor running hours above ; Divide this number but 1.6 to get rough miles. For example, if you use grade A or B oil and your average speed is 40km/h you should change your oil no later than (40x400)=16,000km or 10,000 miles. If you use grade C oil, this figure should be (40x250)=10,000km or 6,250 miles.

Not sure if someone else has used or heard of this approximation for the oil change intervals. I've heard this for a couple of mechanical engineers that specialise in engine rebuild / tunning. Other guys in the industry just recommend changing the oil every 4-5K miles to be on a safe side.

I bought a 12V digital hour meter from RS or Farnell and plumbed it in to my D2 to a feed that was live only when the engine was running. Can't remember exactly which fuse it was now but it was easily tracked down with a multimeter.
I haven't got round to doing it to my D4 yet but I intend to soon - more out of interest than anything else. I then keep a record of hours run along with miles driven when I keep my fuel usage and mileage record for work.

Oh, very interesting hack!

Unless you need a regular check, like Davethegeo, I am sure it should be easier to get from the diagnostics computer once every quarter or so. Need to figure out where these values are hiding )

I'm not sure LR want to be selling loads of engine blocks as this would mean hundreds if not thousands of failures and all the bad press that goes with that.

OK, so its a bit of a compramise, as 16k is further than most of us on here would run between oil changes, and lower running costs (cost of ownership) which both fleet and public customers seem to be looking for.

I certainly dont want to be back to the bad old days of the 300TDI and a service every 6000 miles. For me at the time that meant a service every quarter - gets quite expensive.

I change oil & filter every 6 months or 6k miles; with the mileage I'm currently doing mid-way between "official" annual services.

Wifes car runs C grade oil and the computer works out from driving style when it needs an oil change and from the service book it was between 12 and 15k, I just do it every 5k.

Thanks for sharing your oil changing habits. In the past, i've previously followed the recommendations by the manufacturer, but after speaking with a few experts and heard about a bunch of stories from them I am planning to change the way I change oil. I will change oil more frequently, but I was hoping I could still do it at a reasonable cost.

Thus I was keen to know how to get the engine working hours from the Discovery 4. Anyone knows how to do this?

Cheers
