I could really do with these photos too, it's not jammed on but certainly close (i'm not operating it now, after getting the warning on the dash) going to fit new shoes but thinking ahead....

Brake disk warped due to EPB??

Hi,

my 4 month old rear discs seems to be warped the second time and makes a tsiep, tsiep, tsiep noise when applying foot brakes lightly at higher speeds; besides a slight vibration from the back.

First time was in Namibia towing a 1.5 ton trailvan as, at the speed of 100, suddenly a big vibration went through the vehicle. Stopped, break smell from the rear very hot disk. Applied EPB and disengaged again. After that everything was fine for the next 2 weeks when it happened again.

Back home I got the discs skimmed at a BOSCH service where they told me the EPB was set to tight which could have caused the binding. As per BOSCH set them "correctly". Very good, no vibrations anymore.

Until Sunday when exactly the same happened again; sudden vibration at country road speed, stopped, break smell and drum and disc very hot. Applied EPB, disengaged and all good again. Except that the disc is warped again.

I occasionally use the EPB. An I engaged it before we left the farm we were staying. Can't remember if I disengaged by pressing the button or just by taking off. Could it be that the EPB module did not release fully and I basically drove the whole time with (slightly) engaged EPB over the gravel road at moderate speed 60 km/h and only when I hit the tar and accelerated to 100 the drum got so hot that it warped and caused the vibration which in turn made me stop? Is that plausible?

Any similar stories like that and advise on how to proceed? Surely I want to get to the underlying cause without buying a new actuator and before I buy a set of new discs....Wink And the actuator works actually faultlessly when it comes to how it sounds; no funny noises or squealing or kind of things.....

Clueless......

I'm in the EPB fail club, local garage say it's 'broken' and needs replacing and the local Essex 4x4 specialists don't seem to know the fix and also want to replace the whole unit.

This brilliant thread seems just the ticket but I don't have the confidence to attempt this job myself Embarassed .

Anyone around the Essex area interested in having a go at mine for cash? Whistle

EPB Fail

Hi Guys,

I was also in the EPB fail club, had a squealing EPB, ignored it till the weekend, it jammed up and wouldn't release, pulled the cable to release it, then drove it till the weekend.
I then replaced the discs and pads and cleaned and adjusted the EPB shoes, then tried to release and latch the EPB......... Still squealing like a stuck pig:-(
I removed the spare wheel and from behind the EPB module took off the metal shield and managed to tilt the module backwards enough for me to be able to see the top. took out the screws and with a large flat screw driver managed to unwind the gear.
I took me about 1 and a half hours to sort out the EPB.
I wouldn't have had confidence to try this without this write up.
Thank you Disco_Mikey. And everyone else that contributed to this great post.

Thank you

thank you
this is certainly one of the most useful posts on this forum.
Special thanks to the guy from Brisbane (karman) for the electronic diff solution

this is what saved my day, had been struggling like heck from the front
Fixing LR problems very far from Solihull.
That's why my newest car is a 1999 Disco 2 V8 with 285.000 miles

The problem is the missing documentation, not the LR

My EPB seized last year when in for service (they were testing the brake I think) and garage said it needed a new module as it wouldn't release even when pulling the release cable. They didn't have parts available so they rebuilt it and said not to use the EPB. MOT next month so need to sort my EPB so it may pass (as long as nothing else crops up!).

Had the discs off today and rebuilt the handbrake shoes/springs and adjusted. I then used the IID to try the unjam procedure, it made some stutter noises but said it had completed ok. Decided what the heck, and pressed the EPB to see if it would engage.

It made the same noises again, the same as this youtube video I found below, but thankfully didn't seize the handbrake on:
)

In the fault log it has C1A00-4B Control Module System Internal Failure - over temperature.

On looking around for the description of the error it indicates it is from over use and to allow it to cool, but this was the first try.

Has anyone had this? Is it repairable or a new module? I did not have any noises from the EPB prior to it seizing at the service, and had been working fine till then Big Cry

Managed to get the cover off yesterday and it was indeed jammed as per the pictures originally posted.

Managed to wind it back slowly, was fairly stiff most of the way, and re-latch. Greased up the rod and all worked, and quieter than before it broke.

Although just noticed in the above video the orange wire from the white latch end flapping around, worried I may have trapped it between the face plate now, Censored >.<

Thanks to all who contributed in this thread, helps with the confidence to continue when things aren't going well!

Hi all. My epb module jammed up , I managed to take the module off and unjam it. While off I looked at the cogs in the little gearbox which were all fine.
My problem is once I put it all back together and applied the switch in the cab it just beeps. I’ve taken the cover back off the module so I can see the motor and again tried the switch but it’s unwinding it won’t tighten the cables.
Have I got to do a reset with a computer?

So, for anyone who has successfully done this, is it possible to complete the process just working on the drive using wheel ramps for access? Question

Now my car have the same problem, C1A00 stored, no EPB function. EPB motor sounds like intermittend voltage supply, only little steps.

Rear brake was completely replaced last year.

I removed the cover of the module, removed the wheels, calipers, discs. Everything works fine, nothing blocked or broken.

I removed the old grease out of the module and apply some new grease. But still the same problem occurs the motor only makes little steps.

I pulled the two wires from the motor and but some voltage on it. Motor pulled the wires, shoes moves.

I checked the wiring at the EPB connector, power and ground supply is also fine.

When I start the function "move into mounting position", the motor release the wires and it moves completely to the end. The Nanocom shows a brakeforce of -325N.
Why is his value negative?
Is there a positioning sensor inside the transmission of the EPB module?
Could it be that the motor runs to its end and blocks itself due to a wrong position feedback?
I read the technical system describtion, there is no information about a positioning sensor of the wires, only a force sensor is mentioned there.

So if the force value is negative is the electronic part of the module is faulty, isn`t it?

Any further ideas??

Fantastic!!

Absolutely fantastic advice!! Thank you!!

Before I found this post/guide, a good friend of mine convinced me that we could remove the module and cables ourselves. After a few hours we had the whole shabbang out, including cables.

Turns out reading this we have done everything properly!! Shock horror!! haha.

Cables, motor, cogs and all, all good. It's wound off and ready to go back in........

Now, just a quick question, does the EPB need to be put into "service mode" before we try it? It'll be set up with new shoes etc. wound on, then backed off a couple of notches.

Many thanks

I too have a non-functional epb and am thinking about whether to attempt an unjam. I have an electronic rear differential and an lpg tank in the spare wheel well. Will I be able to get access to the module without needing to take half the car apart? My indie has said we can have a try with the vehicle on the lift.

In fact, if someone is able to point out where the module is on the pictures below, that would be appreciated...
