| ESF While Towing and Resulting Fault Codes - NOW FIXED |

Hi All
Had the dreaded ESF while towing the caravan last weekend and I have just checked the fault codes and found the following;
P023D-21 (68) Manifold absolute pressure - turbocharger/supercharger boost sensor A correlation - General signal failure - signal amplitude<minimum
P0101-17 (68) Mass or volume air flow - circuit range/performance - General electrical failure - circuit voltage above threshold
Been dreading the Turbo is on the way out but wonder if there are any other likely explanations?
This ESF has occured twice in about 400 miles of towing an 1800kg caravan. I wouldn't say the engine was being really stressed when they occurred, we went up the steep hill on the A417 near Birdlip with no problems.
The MAF sensor is clean and the previous owner had the big Intercooler pipe replaced in the recent past. I checked the actuator linkage after the first occurence and all seems well (mines an 08 so should have the self test system working on start up). No black smoke in my mirrors and I don't drive it hard.
Any suggestions please?

Pete at BAS says these codes refer to intercooler or hose issue, going to have s good look at those tonight.

Can't see much without taking the car apart!!
Need a better look at the weekend.
Do you need to remove the intercooler to check it for leaks?

When I had ESF issues when towing I was getting P132B which did turn out to be the turbo, well the stepper motor/ actuator was the problem but the end result was new turbo.
Hopefully with different codes and a pointer from Pete yours may not be the turbo.
Have you checked the actuator rod?, it needs to be very free moving i.e. offer almost no resistance when moved. Stu

Yes, checked the actuator and all seems fine, hoping its not the turbo. I wish changing the complete set of intercooler hoses was an easier job!

My D3 was the same (can't remember codes ) only doing it towing on long hill, but after a lot of visits to the dealers and lots of things change they eventually changed turbo and no more problems

Can anyone tell me the best hose set to buy? Allisport seem pricey but are they worth the extra?

Just been trough this, same issue with ESF when towing (and only when towing)
Turned out to be the Turbo and looks like the actuator as the internals were OK. All fixed but having a "discussion" with the warranty 3rd party company about who pays.
Car wasn't "that bad" in normal driving, but now its fixed I can feel the difference. All sid though, if you can check the hoses first then do so. Also might be worth cleaning the MAP sensor as the first issue I ever had was an clogged map sensor.

Turbo issue seems to be P132b while I'm getting P032d which appears to be the intercooler.

HI, sorry I dont know the codes but they were definitely turbo and not hose/intercooler so I think you are right to explore that before the going to the turbo.
Anythings got to be easier and cheaper than a turbo!

also bought a set of these

just got to get round fitting them 
did buy some T bolt stainless steel clamps so in theory can fit and forget them
inc the pleasure of trying to free off the actuator arm, hope it's not the turbo and just the arm sticking
left hand hose doesn't look to bad but the right hoses look really fiddly

these are the faults i'm getting
P0234-00 turbo overboost
P132B -00 turbo boost control A performance
P0046-00 turbo boost control solonoid - circuit range performance
but everything cleared when i reset the faults

Cant remember the codes but the descriptions sound familiar, I need to talk to the garage to see how the warranty claim is going so Ill see if they can tell me.
Just to recap, ESF warning but only when towing up long hills, cleared by engine on off. Car felt "ok" otherwise on the flat and plodding about, but does feel perkier now its fixed.
Looking at my turbo, it was actually pretty clean inside and the ring/vanes were not at all stuck and the actuator linkage was good as new. It looks like mine was the actuator servo.

Got the three hoses changed today. I have had a good look at the old ones and nothing majorly wrong but they are a bit soft. Especially the middles size one. Have towed a few times since the last ESF but going on the same route as when the problem last arose this coming Thursday. A417 &419 between M4 and M5 so it should be a good test.
