I would implore all users of Facebook & the like to come to their senses and leave the platforms once & for all.
The idea of opting in to facial recognition & other intrusions into one's privacy seems to be crazy.

I've been banging on about privacy for the last 15 years. People thought I was crazy. Now see where we are. Do you think for one minute that FB will only perform facial rec on people who have consented. How's that going to work?
Talking of work, I'm wearing my tinfoil brainwave filter in the office today. Selfie time!

The worrying thing for me is the shadow accounts, you don't have to be registered with them and they still collect data, how can that be right?DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone

Here's an example for you. I wanted an image of a tinfoil hat. I had typed part way through the second post to this thread. Went to Google and typed 'tin' and 'tinfoil hat' was the first suggestion. I hadn't even posted the comment at that point. There are two rules for success,

As with everything, it's up to the user how much or little they share online.
Facebook is an advertising company and tracks its adverts - the same a Google, Taboola, Criteo and all the rest of them, so you shouldn't be surprised that they have data about people who don't use their associated social media platform.
The facial recognition thing is something I'm ambivalent about. I have photos on Facebook in which I'm tagged, so FB already knows what I look like. If it can highlight photos of me that are on FB that I don't know about then I think that's to my benefit.
Facebook has never made a secret about its use of personal data, so I really don't understand why people are suddenly getting all indigent about it.Gordon

No, KTM, that’s the problem. Even without a FB account, your info is collected by them. Furthermore, you can’t delete it. Read NJSS linked articles for clarification.
In effect, You have no control over the data which FB stores about you. Maybe you don’t care about your data, and that’s fine for you. But humans have a right to privacy, enshrined in international law; FB ignore this even if you don’t use their facilities. There are two rules for success,
