For the second time of D3 ownership my ashtray has opened and refuses to shut. I push it in it pops back out. I sold the last car with the faulty ash tray so never got round to fixing it. Whats broken? Ive tried removing the tray itself, seems to be a gear track along the base but no idea what I need to replace.

Mine did it when I first bought it (car was used). The garage's solution to this was to swap a working one from another Disco they had in stock. No idea what the problem was but the salesman told me it was quite common.

Good opportunity to give up the smoking? A vaccine does not stop you catching a virus, or passing it on, or getting ill from it, really ill. It does reduce the likelyhood of you dying when really, really ill. Stay Alive - KEEP AWAY FROM PEOPLE.

There is a liitle plastic pin on the bottom of the ashtray, which LR kindly made out of the most fragile plastic known to man. Needless to say, they snap off very easily. Good new is they are not expensive to replace, but a little fiddly however... My D3 Build Thread

Probably the same space-age plastic used for the 3rd row seat sliders.
I was folding the lower part this weekend and managed to smash it to bits with that fabulous piece of fishing rod sticking out.
Something of a gratifying hammer-to-LCD feeling to it...

Can anybody tell me how to get the mechanism of the ashtray out so i can replace it. Mine seems to have something fallen in behind it and in the process of "fixing it" with a good hard push the front of the sliding bit broke off! The thing now sticks out by about an inch more than it should. Can it be changed without removing the H shaped trim? Have already tried the "pull fairly hard" method of fixing without success!
Many thanks, Richard

did this job a few months ago sorry didnt take any pics
I do remember that most of the centre of the dash board trim had to come out and it was very awkward with plenty of skin taken from the fingers.
if you have small hands you will probably be ok
Wasnt a long job and part was cheep enough but thats probably why it breaks in the first place
