Faulty Fuel Gauge

A few months ago driving over a bump and my fuel level went from 3/4 to 0 and I got the low fuel warning and 0 range, but a few mins later it all popped back up the correct level and has been fine ever since.

This morning on my commute I had the same issue, but I hasn't come back - Tank was filled on Monday so should still be showing almost full, but now its showing totally empty and I have 0 range.

Where is the best place to start, spotted some posts on here saying OSF wheel arch has a connector, others say OSR? Is it both? Anyone have the colours / photo of the connectors?

I had a quick look with the IID and no faults logged for it?

If its going to be a big job I will try and get it done under warranty, but booking it in and trying to claim from a 3rd party warranty isn't the easiest.

Thanks everyone Bow down

It’s a known fault, cheap connections inside the tank, the tank needs dropping and the connections chopping out and new ones fitted, there is a TSB out from LR on it.

Thanks both, gutted as I had 1/4 of a tank on Monday and brimmed it.. If its a tank off job I need to have a game of roulette to try and lower it a bit, I dont fancy spilling a full tank of premium fuel down the street Big Cry

Flack - Is this job something you can fix? Whistle

Sent you a PM Flack Thumbs Up

Just been playing with the IID and I did a change to CCF (enable alarm chirp on locking) and the fuel gauge popped back up correctly in between the car rebooting so thought that had fixed it, but when i did the final power cycle it vanished again Big Cry

As its going to be a while until I can get the tank dropped, is there any connectors in the wheel arches? I could find the time on an evening to check this out.

Just thought I would get the wheels in motion for a warranty claim, and guess what.. They said fuel tank, sender, and gauge isn't covered by the warranty I have - so regardless of fault they don't care Big Cry

On the plus side I am 8 months into ownership and this will be the first thing I have had to pay - other than servicing, tyres, and a few other bits and bobs.

Just to answer my own question - I dropped the rear wheel arch liner out last night, really easy to do. Used the IID to lift the car to its maximum and I could then get to all the screws and clips.

No connectors in there for fuel tanks - I did take the opportunity to empty a load of mud out of there though.

The annoying thing is if I do a soft reset on the IID it works for about 30 seconds and actually shows the level, and its decreasing correctly.

I thought I read somewhere on here if the car thinks it has no fuel it will stop anyway even if it does have fuel.

I had both my senders changed 6 months ago after mine did it once as I didn't want to risk it on a long journey.

I’ve had mixed reports of cars failing but then others saying it’s fine. Mine has been running fine without it- other than the FBH not working Big Cry

But as luck would have it half way home tonight it made an appearance!

I drove from Nice in the south of France without a gauge (same fault as yours) best part of 1000 miles door to door non stop other than toping up at least every 300 miles to make sure!!

As Flack says it was the connector in the tank.

When the same thing happened on mine it ran for about 100/150 miles then limp mode for 5 miles then stopped, restart every 300 metres to get home luckily only a couple of miles on a Sunday night.

Monday morning breakdown truck to local indy, cost £180 ish to drop tank and replace connectors inside.

Hopefully yours will behave better than mine if you've got 1000 miles to cover.

The faulty fuel gauge has been coming and going since I first mentioned it, I have been living with it furling up every 300 miles or so but on Saturday 19th it went off, and hasn't been back since.. Yesterday driving down the A1, cruise control on at 50mph the car started to shudder, then back to normal - It kept doing this every say 15 seconds.. for a few minutes. It felt like a miss fire - then I lost all power completely - Luckily I managed to roll into a closed off lay-by around the cones and the car died completely. Got the IID out and had a few codes about no fuel, reduced performance etc that wouldn't clear. In the end I did a reset via the IID and managed to do the rest of the journey without any issues (500miles)

Looks like I will need to get this sorted sooner rather than later, as the fact it just cut all power.
