FBH : Excess smoke
As the cold weather sets in i notice that my FBH is kicking in as expected. However I have really noticed two things :
1/ The is a LOT more smoke/smell than I remember from last year
2/ The smoke is coming from the front of the car, underneath the number plate (i though the FBH exhaust was further back)
Should I be concerned ?
To give you an indication of how bad it is. Yesterday I drove a very short distance to B&Q and parked up right behind a 911 GT3 who has just arrived. THE FBH was smoking away. The guy in the GT3 got half way to the shop when glanced back at his car. He stopped and headed back looking extremely worried. 2 minutes later he caught up with me and told me my car was smoking - he obviously thought it was his car initially .Also Gone : MY14 D4 SDV6 HSE : Barolo Black + Almond

Mine's been like that over the past couple of weeks.
I used to wonder if the FBH even worked but not anymore - it's like having a cloak of invisibilty at the front of the car!2013 D4 HSE Luxe in Indus Silver

FBH exhaust is just in the front of the LHS wheel arch. depending on wind direction etc the smoke can look like its coming from under the number plate.
lots of smoke can be normal as FBH purges the fuel on startup. as long as its grey smoke and not black or green it should be OK. mine chucks out a lot of smoke on occasions but should clear after a few minsDuncan

Its normal.
Doesn't take much of a breeze to move the fumes under the engine and out the front. Mine does it at times depending on where abouts on the drive it is.
And if its cold the fumes will appear to be more - just like the exhaust out the other end.

thanks guys - that make me feel better. The smoke is indeed grey. I was getting concerned that i would one day return to a hulk of burning metal Also Gone : MY14 D4 SDV6 HSE : Barolo Black + Almond

I've never ever noticed any smoke from mine. I can often smell it through the aircon when it's running, and I can hear it from outside the car but no smoke. This is my 2nd FBH and the first one didn't smoke either (even when it was working!).Now an ex-D3 owner after 7 happy years. Miss the car but not the big bills
Should the exhaust smoke be coming out the nearside or offside wheelarch?? I always get confused when people say LHD or RHD?? Is LHD sitting in the car or standing in front looking at the bonnet??? 8)
No confusion with nearside or offside............

Nearside... or right wheel arch as looking at the front of the D3... the left if looking from the rear of the D3... on your left if looking at the passenger or nearside side of the D3 and on the other side on the right if looking at the drivers side of the D3.
If your looking from above then your just being silly.

The FBH exhaust pipe exits closest to the LH wheelarch but is angled towards the right side of the car. Which side the clean fumes / copious quantities of smoke (delete as applicable) exits from depends on wind direction, as often as not whe stationary it rise up the front of the bonnet on mine.
There seems no rhyme or reason as to the smoke produced, sometimes mine is clean, sometimes it looks like a challenger tank smoke generator on full chat.
Currently it produces no smoke as it is broken Cheers
