FBH Keeps running even though been driving for a while |
|
Can anyone tell me if the FBH should keep running for a while after you stop, even though your engine temp is at normal having driven for half an hour.
I am of course happy it works as I see a lot of people have hassle in that department, it just seems that mine always smokes after a drive when below 5 degrees. I have a friend who has a Sport and says that his does smoke but only if short trip and cold.

ICB,
I am sure Wiggs will confirm if he's around but I believe it goes through a shutdown cycle after the car is stopped and ignition turned off. Couldn't say what sort of period that would be but it sounds as if yours is working okay... Regards, Trev.

It can run on for a while after switch off, this is because it goes through a 'purge' stage as part of its shutdown. The FBH fan runs on for about a minute, this could expel some fumes.
Also, it depends on the engine temp if the FBH is running or not. If the coolant is below 75 degrees, and the air temp is below 6 it will be running. If you have not been driving very fast, then the engine needs the fbh to keep the temp up. The engine is really very efficient, and does not produce enough excess heat at low speeds to keep the coolant temp up.
So I would not be worried, so long as the temp guage stays in the normal position.

Shut down cycle is 100 seconds, it can also be dependant whether the system has been running on full or part combustion or idle phase, e.g. if ambient temp is below 5 degrees and coolant below 72 degrees the system will be in full combustion mode. If you were then to park up and switch off the shut down cycle will be longer, this allows for the burner to run a little longer to prevent a build up of carbon on the glow pin/ flame sensor and also to allow for the fuel pump to re-energise.

The timer function was removed during an enhancment programme upgrade a few years ago, apparently it was deemed not to be eco friendly, so you will need the timer !!!
