FBH too noisy - 1st World problems!

As we're coming into the warm weather, it seemed like a perfect time to post this! Very Happy

On my previous car - Range Rover L322 - the noise the FBH made when operating was nothing more than a low fan noise. The Disco however is more of a howl. Not a massive problem, but the fact that my neighbourhood is very quiet means that when I have the FBH set on timer to have a nice defrosted car for those early icy mornings, the only thing you can hear, even in the house, is the FBH.

Looking at pictures online I noticed that some have an intake silencer fitted at the rear of the unit. Mine didn't, and judging by the OEM clips and routing of the intake hose round the front of the FBH, never did! If anyone can shed any light on this I'd be grateful (mine is a 2014 MY and otherwise unmolested or modified).

I had a Webasto type intake silencer handy that I'd bought from Amazon for a couple of quid for another project:

and here it is Jerry rigged to see if it worked:

To be honest, the way it's rigged seems fine and may become permanent. All I did was slide the hose that came with the silencer over the existing intake hose without even cutting it and re-routed it over the back of the FBH to fix to the bracket very roughly as it appears in the photos I've seen.

So, if it is common to not have the silencer fitted as per my Disco, and its too noisy for you. A couple of quid on Amazon, some cable ties and 5 minutes under the bonnet solves it.

It would be interesting to know if others don't have the silencer fitted and just have the open intake hose routed down towards the bottom of the coolant tank too.

I don't think the D4 has the silencer fitted. I have a very early D4 FBH here and it doesn't have a silencer.
