Trying to book Ferry to France and the D3 ia 1.88cm height.

So do you select under or over 1.83cm as the price changes - do you think they would notice Thumbs Up

I took the boat from Harwich and then back to Harwich and booked over 1.83. I though exactly the same when I saw the woman in the booth. She was very pleasant and I don't reckon she'd check or question you if you said it was 1.82. Stick it in access height and give it a go. You drive in exactly the same area as the others and there were loads of campervans that were higher so it wouldn't be as if you wouldn't get on. Maybe just have to pay the difference if they were really stubborn or have a guide to work to with a list of vehicle heights....

I don't suppose you will be the first to have tried....

I took the ferry from France to Britain in May.

I ticked the "above 183" and paid the difference....mainly because (if I remember correctly) the difference was less than 10 pound (4 if I'm not mistaken).

I'm sure there is no harm in trying, but is it really worth the hassle for a couple of bucks?

If you're telling me that the price difference is 50 pounds, then I'd be up for a little white lie as well....... Whistle

The difference was around £40 each way when I booked

In the train I think the limit is 1.80 (but the bar is a little bit higher) and I have always been able to pass throw (but I do not have roofrails etc).
Once we booked for 1.80 and then went in the part for bus but we did not have to pay the differnce (the train was half full)

Many thanks for the replies - maybe I need to let some air out of the tyres!

Is it correct that the train only goes to calais ? There isn't a service direct to Paris that can carry yourself and the D3 ?

Yes - it only goes Calais. According to their website, you can't take a D3 on motorail within Europe either (too high)

When you say 'train' do you mean Le Shuttle?

If so, their height limit is 1.85m but when we turned up at Folkstone in a D4 (supposedly 1.97m) the chap in the kiosk had a little swing round bar with flappy rubber height guide and decided that we could go in the standard line....

Whoooahhhh... it did feel a little snug and I did drop it into access mode but we made in (and out) without parting with paint or metal.

Coming back, we had just done the 700Km drive (eyes like golfballs and kids doing the 'are we there yet' bit for fun to see if they could wind us up...) and so took notice of the 'above 1.85' signs so lined up with the coaches, motorhomes and those with top boxes.

Cue the slightly cross words when we watched both a RRS and a D4 sail under the supposedly 1.85m (very solid) bar!

However, the overheight element was just as quick on and off the train so no real issues!

Hope this helps

Zac,
Are you referring to car trains? The D3 is allowed on the DB Autozug and the dutch trains, both going far into France and Italy.
