Fire in engine bay diagnosis needed
My car caught fire and i put it out with powder extinguisher, it has a burnt cable that may be the glow plugs and some melted plastic from the engine cover is stuck on the top of the engine.
I can see a black hard pipe that has melted but do not know what it is.
The ignition will not come on only red flashing light for alarm. central locking works but car will not start.
I need to repair this car ASAP and need to know what parts i will need.

Today i was driving in the town at 30mph when i smelt smoke, the car in front looked fine and so i looked around for burning but after a few seconds i could see smoke in the passenger foot well it was getting thicker very quickly. I pulled over and when i opened the door flames shot up from the footwell to the roof, i ran around opened the passenger door and pulled the bonnet catch and using a metal bar from the jack handle i forced the positive lead off the battery terminal. by this point the car was full of thick black choking smoke and i could see smoke starting to come from behind the engine then red flames were coming out and the thick black smoke was stopping the traffic. Somebody came out with a powder fire extinguisher and i used most on the engine and managed to do foot well flames too.
All the wires in the engine bay now have no plastic insulation and are just burned bare metal and the only electric thing that works is the central locking, no lights or ignition.
I really spent a lot of time on this vehicle keeping it in excellent condition as i used it off road regular for work.
I would like to know if anyone else has had this problem and what could have caused it

i WOULD CONSIDER claiming on your insurance.
They would likely write the car off though, (may give you £6K) ?
and you could buy the car back off them for £1K ?
That would give you 5K to fix it.
I would guess it's gonna cost maybe £1K in parts to fix that.
The further you dig in and spend, the more you will realise you need to spend, and wish you hadn't started.
I would consider a replacement car I think, unless you have lots of spare cash and time

If you must repair it yourself you should seriously consider buying the parts from a breaker.

I doubt its glowplug wiring.
SOme did have a reputation for catching fire. I think it was the fuel pump at rear of engine. (not a cheap part itself!)

The insurance will not pay as MOT expired previous week and i did not know unfortunately
the 2 rocker covers are ok i think, i do not see holes in them like other peoples fires, i see a small melting point in passenger footwell
I found a video on youtube of body off repair for this problem but mine does not seem anywhere near the extent of damage i have seen on others, i do not know which parts i need.

Possibly cheaper & quicker to get a vehicle with a knackered crank, plus gives plenty of other parts for resale or reuse.Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana

I have no time and very little money atm, i can see the pump now but the hose on the top which bends rather tightly has gone so i can assume this pipe split so perhaps i just need to put new fuel hoses onto the existing pump. It is difficult to get a good look behind there.

That is not a cheap or easy repair
Engine wiring loom
Fuel pipes
Leak off pipe
Oil filter housing
Scuttle panel, and possibly wiring loom
If you need it repaired quickly or cheaply, I have bad news for you...
Then you need to find the initial cause of the fire My D3 Build Thread
