I know it can go on front edge of passenger seat runners but when I tried to remove the plastic covers to see what's needed they were reluctant to come off to the point where it seemed they might break. Probably due to never having been removed in the 7 years since the car was built, so I'll try warming them with a hair-dryer when I try again … or have I missed a trick ?.

Fairly sure its the drivers seat where they are supposed to go. Mine there and its fine in terms of room etc.
If I recall I was VERY hard to get the cover off, to the point I had to check the forums several times to make sure I was going it right. I think it just pulls off, but let someone else confirm that,Disco 3: Lotus Elise S1: Ferguson T20: Audi A2

Regarding extinguisher, there are (for D3 at least) two models - one which mounts in front of the driver’s seat and another in front of the passenger’s seat.

My D4 cover plate (same as D3) took sooooooper human strength, well by my standards, to pull off. Fitted fire extinguisher (non LR) but it was too wobbly. Cover still not put back.
