First time camping

Hi everyone.

SWMBO wants us to go camping this summer, which I'm also happy about.

But to be honest I'm on a budget so would really appreciate some advice on recommendations for equipment that I need and what are just nicety's.

So there will be me, SWMBO and our 2 boys who will be 5 and 3.

Thinking of going somewhere for about a week, I'm sure everyone will enjoy it so after that maybe 2 -3 times a year!

Any advice appreciated

You NEED:
A tent that's big enough
Sleeping mats, or blowups and a pump (12v elec. easier)
Sleeping bags
Something to cook on (depends on your ambitions)
A torch
Something to store water in
Pots, plates, etc can rob from the kitchen if you want, or cheap plastic
A mallet

Everything else is pretty much optional

Take a look at the 'family starter' packages

Halfords tend to do some decent deals around this time for tents, lights, sleeping bags and blow up mattress' I suppose it depends on how much you want to spend. There's often 2nd hand tents on the bay of E that would be ideal for a first timer.

Then It's a case of finding a site and enjoying the great outdoors. Very Happy

Thumbs Up

I've got a 2nd hand 4 man tent for sale on the forum, might be ideal as a starter without breaking the bank.

Try and buy good quality 2nd hand rather than cheap new stuff.
Plenty used equipment out there, the bay, gumtree local paper ads.etc.
Electric hook up cable, if the site has power, keeps the beer in the cool box chilled Whistle

Enjoy Thumbs Up

Thanks for all the info

I'm open to going pretty much anywhere in the country, just needs to have as much stuff as possible to keep the kids occupied!

Should i be looking at booking now? it will be in the school summer holidays when we go, no preference on week at the moment.

I would advise getting a tent half as big again as will sleep you all comfortably.

If you have a wet day or two and are confined to barracks there is nothing worse than being crammed in a small space.

At least look at a tent that sleeps 4 but has a decent additional living area.

There are 5 in my little tribe and we have a 10 man Kalahari tent from Go Outdoors. It was only £230 in a sale and I can comfortably stand up in all of the middle section with the additional bedrooms being used for food and clothes storage.

It's your holiday, no benefit in roughing it!

Cheers,

Darren

As Darren mentions...Do try and get a tent that is big enough to stand up in.

A gas bottle, regulator, and a two burner hob plus grill, and a small but sturdy table on which to use it.

Kettle, fry pan and saucepan. Plastic bowl for washing up. 25litre white plastic water bottle.

Knives forks spoons cups plates, matches in waterproof bag. Torch

Good quality sleeping bags.

wellies for early morning forays when the grass is soaked with dew.

Try it with this sort of kit..you will soon become an expert at knowing what your tribe needs to take .....crayons, colouring books, story books etc for the little ones.

I recall when we went camping for the first time we hired all the kit and this allowed us to determine things like tent size cooking kit etc etc.

Hope the sun shines for you all.
