My first out of warranty repair - cost details |
|
The warranty on my 55 plate disco ran out last October, and I thought the details of the work just done (at 44,000 miles) might be of future interest to forum readers... so here they are:
Loss of power under 2000 revs, forum concensus seemed to be EGR valve failure which was indeed correct:
£190 labour + £240 parts (both valves) + VAT
Broken tailgate latch, already repaired once before under warranty:
£95 labour + £18 parts + VAT
Total, after adding VAT, just shy of £635.
But still cheaper than the LR extended warranty... so far.

But still £216 out of pocket if you had gone with Tesco finest at £419
Tales of expense like this, just make me even more convinced that the D3 is not a car to manage without extra cover on, whether your choice be LR, Tesco, AA or A N OTHER I believe that every human has a finite number of heart-beats. I don't intend to waste any of mine running around doing exercises.

Yup, I appreciate that now... esp. given the amount of evidence on this forum
There's always the sense that when you pay for any warranty, you almost want something to go wrong in order to justify the cost...
Out of interest, would Tesco have fully covered the EGR valve fault? I thought "valves" were exceptions under their cover??

The AA do a breakdown service, Home start and £500.00 costs towards parts £17.00 per month. Steve

That looks like a pretty good compromise, although it wouldn't have helped me this time...
Quoting their policy requirements, the car must
"a) break down as a result of Mechanical or Electrical Failure, and
b) as a result, be prevented from continuing its journey safely, ..."
Pulling out of junctions and crawling a hundred yards isn't exactly what I'd call "safely", but I can imagine it would be difficult getting them to cough-up as I never really broke down. (Valves are probably regarded as "wear and tear", too.)
In the absence of either the LR or Tesco warranties, the AA option at least offers some peace of mind I guess, for a fraction of the money.
Thanks for that!

The good thing regarding the AA policy is that it's not payable annually , you pay monthly with 30 days notice if you want out. This may suit a lot of people during the current financial situation.

there is no good reason why it would not be covered, other than user abuse I believe that every human has a finite number of heart-beats. I don't intend to waste any of mine running around doing exercises.

Hi Landyhead,
one of mine has stopped retracting and is getting caught in the tail gate, currently waiting for it to be fixed under warranty, the bit is on back order, but you have just reminded me it must be time to make a little callto Shukers... You can pay the Tesco warranty by Direct Debit over 10 months of £41.90 per month. (no interest charged)

Surely, this would have a year warranty anyway (assuming it happened within the last year?) 2020 SDV6 D5 HSE, Carpathian Grey +

RE: repairs under warranty.
Apparantly any work done under warranty is only covered for the time the car remains in that warranty.
I found this out when I tried to claim a replacement battery, Dealer fitted one in March 08, warranty expired May 08, and the battery failed December 08. Thought I had nothing more to do than call LR and arrange replacement. No Chance, sir, your warranty is expired. But the battery is only 8 months old. Not covered, sir.
Called LR customer services, same story.
So theoritically anything done in the last week of the Warranty has no warranty. Crazy, but that's what they told me.
Cheers.

Unfortunately it first went in the middle of 2006...
I did haggle for a "goodwill" compromise from the dealer - having exactly the same fault twice within the space of three years is pretty poor - and managed to get a 10% part discount across all the work... so better than nothing!
Cheers,

So, if you buy a new part IE: battery you get a 1yr warranty (or some batterys carry longer)
but if you get a battery for arguments sake on last day of warranty, you get no warranty.
surely thats wrong and against consumer protection. welsh petrol head
