Fitted a Discvery 4 Steering wheel to my Discovery 3

I picked up a 2012 wheel, column, stalks e.t.c a few weeks back on eBay for £39.

The current wheel is rank, as per most D3's now.

Anyway, set about fitting it yesterday. I upgraded to the D4 stalks too,

as they look more modern and smarter. All went well, drove up the road and the airbag light came on. Really don't know why, as it really was a unbolt on and off job. 95% sure I didn't move the squib of out place too.

Plugged it in and it comes up with 'Control Module'

If I go into the ECU it says 'Passenger airbag cut of switch A' - Fault.

I've checked the steering angle sensor and that is spot on (as in the angle is 0 when straight) - does it get that from the squib or elsewhere?

Any thoughts? Had the battery off when doing it and gave the car a full service too. Obviously went behind the glove box to do the pollen filter, but there are no cables in site, so don't see how I could have done anything to the passenger airbag.

To top it off, I have my MOT today at 4:30pm Sad Knew I should have waited.......

Edit: Its a 2012 wheel with flappy paddles

Didn't think a D4 wheel would work on a D3 without the updated switch packs etc from Black Box

The switches are all over the place, but didn't think it messed the airbag up, as they are entirely separate....(apart from the earth wire - that goes to the buttons plug).

what happens if you fit the old steering wheel?

The stalks are just plug and play and should have no bearing on it

Did you let the system sleep before disconnecting the battery and taking the wheel off?
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

I haven't tried it with the complete steering wheel, but did try the old airbag in and it made no difference. Worth trying I guess! Smile

Yup, and hard reset. Probably a good hour at least as I did the full service first.

suspect I'm about to ask a daft question but here goes anyway ...

As the fault says "Passenger airbag" ... are you looking in the wrong place? Would it not say "Drivers airbag" for the wheel mounted one ???

Passenger airbag cut-off switch... probably tugged a wire off it.

Have you got the passenger airbag isolated with the switch near the A pillar (when the passenger door is open) operated with the key ISTR? - if not try isolating it, also check the wiring inside the pigeon hole where the fuses are and pollen filter that go to the isolating switch.
Have the D4 switches got the cruise control switches?- can’t see them in the photo.
You have a PM!

This is a picture of mine when I fitted it a few years back, like a fool I upgraded to a D4.

I was thinking maybe it was poor translation from my code reader, but maybe I really have knocked something when doing the pollen filter. Will have a look when I get home tonight. I did look in there after doing the pollen filter and there wasn't really a cable in site, so god knows how I would break something...but you never know! Very Happy

It also says 'Off' underneath it. Airbag is on, so you could be one to something. Will have a look when home. Thanks Smile

Yes I do, I will have a look.

ISTR?

Yes, I think the buttons are on the bottom left. Although looks like you have some buttons coming from the side in the 7o clock position?

Will look at the PM now Smile

The buttons you refer to are for adaptive cruise and are not used, the heated wheel came off a RRS Thumbs Up
I can now see the cruise switches on yours.

Used it as is last winter and it's been hibernating during the summer.

Back to daily duties for winter next month, so bought a new squib (well 2 actually, I can't find the one I bought last year! Sad ), and fitted it yesterday.

Same codes (well plus a new one after comparing my photos in this thread!) and they wont reset/erase.

I will have another dig around behind the glove box, as I had forgotten i'd done a full service at the same time (thanks to this thread for the reminder!), but I guess if I can't find anything I'll get my local independent to scan it and see what they think.

Interestingly a quick google brought this thread up: https://landroverforums.com/forum/lr3-28/p...oes-98056/

Looks like I could have somehow trashed the module?

Smile
