Flatdog Rax

Hi

Anyone got a flatdog Rax on their D3/4. Looking at some options, like front runner but 1k is too much.....

Any feedback welcome

I don't have one, but I've fitted a couple of both types

The Flatdog is just a welded version of the Front Runner. The racks look almost identical and use the same rail mounting system for the bars

IMO the Front Runner is well worth the extra price. It's infinitely more flexible, you can move the actual load bars around to suit and you can bolt almost anything to the edging rails because the corners are removable.

Slightly less relevant to the Discovery rack I know, but I recently went from a Defender double cab to a 90 and was able to keep the same roof rack. To make the Front Runner rack fit the 90 I only had to purchase a longer side rail kit and 2 extra load bars... so it only cost me £80 instead of having to buy a whole new rack

If you want something that makes you look girly, and/or you are worried about 0.25mpg and mostly you drive around with absolutely noting in the rack.. get yourself a prospeed.

To be honest the prospeed is the dogs nadgers but for the cost of it and the additional accessories its a bit OTT for me.

I spoke with Flatdog today and the D3 Rack is £702 inc VAT, it comes with the fittings for the roof channels and also (if you travel to their warehouse, its all fitted for free.

I do a lot of camping with me two boys so I use a ARB awning and a Whizz 26 tent, so the ARb at least stays on the rack, rack mounts are £36 for x3. It seems to me to be better value than most for what it is.

I’ve had a flat Hannibal rack permanently fitted for 12 years. It’s incredibly useful, particularly because it’s flat. I’ve often wondered how practical the Prospeed rack is.

Hi Moo

Yes that's my thoughts too... Have had a chat with Prospeed today. I think the flatdog is more practical and better priced ....I'll just have to live with being girly.....lol

My flat front runner rack with the 'sliding eyelets' channels, that I had on my old D2 was far more useful and easy to load up than the current D4 Prospeed as you could just add and slide eyelets into exactly the right place - as many as you like, wherever you like. With a huge piece of phenolic ply* on my Prospeed it gives a large roof-sized flat area but with the eyelets stuck in certain places on the edge. It was also half the price.

One big benefit however over the Front Runner (apart from it not looking like you've got a bed frame on your roof minus the mattress) is the fact that the Prospeed doesn't flex at all when walking on it, the FR used to have me a bit nervous at 19 stone. I believe Hannibal and Patriot versions are sturdier than FR? And of course it looks fantastic with its roof-hugging design.

*When I bought my Prospeed rack, no 'official' moulded floor was available for it for several months Rolling Eyes ..soI had to improvise. To be fair, for £90 it's still in A1 condition and covers the whole floor or the rack
