Front Diff Leak

A bit of history I purchased the car in Aug '18 from an advery on here, lovel car FSH and loads of paper work from main dealers for the work.

One of the things they had replaced was the front diff, this was done in Oct '17 @ ~80K miles.

Around 6 months ago I was under the car fixing a leaking gearbox, and noticed that the front diff was leaking, then noticed that the drain plug was about to drop out as it hadn't been tightened!! So fixed all that and cleaned it up, fast forward to today and I'm under the car fixing an intercooler hose split and notice

Only looking closer it looks like its leaking from where the driveshaft enters the diff.

Any idea if this is an easy seal to replace, or is it a diff out job?

Thanks,

Mike

check the breather its located next to the g/box cooler pipes on the top of the right side rad looking in the engine bay,if its got a straight vent on it cut it off and listen for the vac escape then you can either buy the modified (90*) pipe and fit or as I did was put some rubber pipe over the plastic pipe and tuck it away so it gets no dirt/water into the pipe

ps mine was leaking the same but not as bad did the vent 4yrs ago been fine since

pps as your going to need to top the oil up its worth blowing down the cut pipe with the level plug out to check the breathers not blocked Thumbs Up
 please excuse any grammer/punctuation mistakes,i'm thick,thankyou

Someone on here did a picture series of replacing the seal without taking diff out and from the instructions - not hard to do

Forgot to mention I changed the vent when I first noticed the leak ~6 months ago, although I didnt check to see if it was blocked, so will look into that.

Thanks all Smile

It’s a very easy fix with the diff in situ. Just remove driveshaft nut, unbolt hub, slide driveshaft out, remove old seal and tap new one in. Most difficult part was releasing driveshaft out of diff, I had to use a drift eventually as getting a pry bar on it wasn’t easy for the offside one I did.

After breather change with the 90* type the leak usually stops due to pressure equalizing inside the diff during warm-up and cool-down cycles Thumbs Up
