Front and rear washers not working

Hi all first post and looking for help. I have recently bought a 2012 D4 and suddenly both front and rear washers are not working. Checking the handbook I have checked fuse 38 which was ok. Although I note there is a separate fuse for the rear wash so it did seem unlikely.

The question I have is - are there any common components for both washers that would stop them both working? I would have assumed with separate fuses for front and back washers there must be two pumps? If that’s true there must a common component to both? HELP REQUIRED GUYS.

Welcome aboard!

When you try to operate the washers, can you hear the motors at all ?

Stand to be corrected, do the Headlight washers work?
There are two pumps as I understand it, one for both front and rear washers and one for the headlights,
You should be able to access the pump via the nearside inner wheel arch liner.

The headlight washers only work on every 3 or 4th operation and only when head lights are on.
Have you checked the water level in the reservoir?Whistle
If the pump is running when the washers are operated and there is plenty of water in the reservoir check the pipes between the bonnet and insulation for mouse damage. Check elsewhere for pools of water after the washers have been operated.
Does the rear washer work?
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Many thanks for the replies
Headlight washers work fine water bottle topped up. Just had a thought there’s not two are there?

Neither front or rear washers work but wipers are fine.

don't know if Disco's are affected but some cars suffer from algae/mould growth in the water tank (invalidates your BMW warranty as it proves you've NOT used their approved washer fluid IIRC !!! ).

If you think it's a possibility, tip some bleach in and wait an hour or so, then flush the tank out by putting a hose-pipe in the top for several minutes.

The same pump does both front and rear, it just works in different directions. If you don’t hear the pump, you need to pull back the front left wheel splash shield and check the connector.

Thanks. Can’t here a pump running. Can I assume the splash is the inner wheel arch? Is that much of a job?

It is.

Very easy, I didn’t even take my wheel off, I just turned the wheel, pulled the plastic rivets out and pulled back the liner until I had access. In my case the pump worked but no water came out of the washer jets. Instead it just pumped it out all over the floor. The hose had split across where it plugged onto the pump, I cut a 1/4” off and pushed the fresh end onto the pump and that was that.

I’m not sure if the connectors for the 2 pumps are the same but if they are and you can make them reach, you could switch them over to see test if it’s wiring or pump.
