What sort of mileage have you done, and how much of that has been off road?
They look mangled because they had to hacksaw through the outer casing of the bush as they were corroded in as well. I have just done 100,000km and, lets see  The Simpson Desert trip, The Cape York trip, Birdsville races twice, Deau National Park fire trails, High Country trails, Lake Eyre trip  must be about 30,000km of offroad stuff and with the car loaded up I'm close to GVM  2013 D4, E-diff, Vision pack
