I guess this one is for those in the know ..Local Sainsbugs fuel stop was closed this morning. Spotted it was getting its tanks filled by a BP tanker ???

Is there anything to this, or is it just .. ignore the badge because its supermatket stuff inside ?

Which fuel?

Reference the discussion regarding Supermarket fuel or Branded fuel. When touring in France I have always thought that there was a big difference in the fuels. Could be smoother roads and less congestion. Whether the same difference exists over in the UK I am not sure. I seem to remember that some years ago Tesco tanks were topped up by Jet (aka Esso?)
Am I being too simplistic in saying that if by using branded fuel consumption improves from 25 to 27 mpg that is an improvement of 8%. If the cost of a litre is 84 p (£3.81p per gallon) then an 8% increase in price to 91p (£4.13p per gallon)) gives a similar cost situation Question Question
Or have I missed something Embarassed

But don't forget the addition range you'll get with premium diesels (Ultimate, Esso Energy etc)... I see around 40 miles additional in total range... or more than a free gallon

My experiences are as follows.

Sainsburys / Tesco /Asda fuel I get approx 21.5 - 22.7 MPG as a good average.

Shell standard I get 24.8 - 25.7 as a standard

BP Ultimate I get 22.5 as a standard.

Her in doors has been using cheeper fuel in her car for a while now and I asked her to pay more and switch to the local shell and sure enough she is getting and additional 50-70 miles to the tank more than she did.

I don't notice any difference in performance or engine noise between BP Ultimate and standard derv.

Interesting... the reverse of what I get.

What is your wife driving ? I get the extra miles in my D3.

Does take a few tanks to notice the difference though.

ah she's driving a citreon picasso (had to cough that out). When I worked for a rather large supermarket chain we brought out a "premium" statement against our fuel, which incidentaly was supplied by Elf. And at that time all petrol / diesel was the same in terms of its methods for refining and the only difference between the suppliers was the additives in the fuel that differentiated between the brands. Accepting that there are different octane levels.

Not sure if much has changed in recent years, but a contact in Esso swears blind that Shell is the best brand that can be bought.

I have been using BP Ultimate for a while now. My average has settled at 22.7 - 23mpg depending on use.

I have a Shell station in the village, so I think I will switch to Shell for a few thousand miles to compare the MPG.
