What fuel?

Personally I use Tesco because of 5p off deal and its generally cheaper. However I've noticed some branded garges matching Tesco's price.

I have been using BP Ultimate for a while now. It does make the engine pull stronger, and it easier to keep the revs down on the auto whilst accelerating. The economy is still lacking however, 22.7 average at the moment, and its pretty static at that.

I suspect that if I switched back to Tesco then it would drop to 21mpg ish, which is what it did last winter.

Like Gareth, BP Ultimate whenever possible. About 7p a litre more expensive but the car definitely feels as if she likes drinking that stuff. But do be careful, the BP Ultimate unleaded does a good job of tricking you into thinking it diesel Exclamation

Oh yes! so nearly fell for that one. Not concentrating and had the nozzle in the 'ole and was just about to press the trigger, when something made me check the price on the pump - jeez it was close. Embarassed

Has anyone ever done the maths? Does any extra MPG from these "premium" diesels offset the extra cost?
I keep choking when I see the price of BP Ultimate etc and go for the bog standard stuff.

No, it does not make financial sense - but lets face it, not much does these days Wink

It does run better, its smoother, its quieter. BUT the weird thing is, you only notice when you can't get any, and you have to put normal derv in, and you then realise that it does in fact make a difference.

Not done the math but I do tend to get an extra 50 ish miles out of a full tank on BP Ultimate. The newish Esso Energy System seems to give me the same results (power and extra range) and is at normal diesel prices compared to BP Ultimate.

Beginning to think BP are ripping us off now as the top brands now offer the same kind of fuel. Motorway services (M42 / 40) seem to be dominated by BP. Only one Esso stop I know of. The BP Ultimate is 100.9p per ltr and the Esso around 96p

Would love the car rags to do a proper test of these engine cleaning, more power, better economy fuels.

From what I gather the engine needs to have a sophisticated engine management system to take advantage of them though according to Fifth Gears testing. The more modern the car and the more sophisticated (Scubby compared to small hatch) the higher the BHP gain and economy gain.

The TDV6 is I assume in the league of sophisticated as there is a definite difference when I downgrade to supermarket fuel which I only buy if desperate.

Average range on my 'S' is around 560 miles - sometimes on a long run will break 600 miles (just).

Personally feel BP worth the price (if bought off Motorway) and Esso definitely a good buy. The new Total I have not tried, again advertises the same benefits as Ultimate.

The question is "what fuel's best?" - dunno 'cos i'm not a petrochemist..
However, i've predominantly been squirting Asda's best into the wallet-sponge behind the O/S/R flap. 'normal' use gives me 22-23mpg with a current best of 25.6 on a decent run (300 - ish mile round trip) including about 90 mins offroading. at 89.9/l, it's not too bad. If I was using my Disco 3 as a business vehicle as Gareth , Simon and probably some others are, then i'd take it altogether more seriously.

In case you're wondering, there's an Asda on the way to work... no other reason Wink

Hey its not that far out! I have been using the ETREX to plot a few journeys (and to learn how to use its data more efficiently) recently, and at 80 mph on the GPS the car reads 82.
