At the risk of re-opening the can of worms re “premium” fuels etc. Here is my experience & two pence worth. Almost all of this relates to my Merc. diesel but I am assuming! it will be applicable to my D4.

Using standard grade fuels:
• Some smoke under hard acceleration
• Seems to accumulate more soot in the exhaust – always a bit embarrassing when you put your foot down to overtake something and leave the poor soul behind you in a cloud of soot.
• Sounds much louder on tick-over & at low speeds (other noise drowns out whatever engine noise there is at higher speeds)

Using premium fuel (BP Ultimate, Shell Advanced):
• No smoke on hard acceleration
• Rarely accumulates much soot in the exhaust
• Sounds much quieter
• Seems (but this may just be my imagination) a bit more responsive

Not noticed much of a difference in MPG – but given very varied driving conditions it is very difficult to be very scientific about it.

Now the relevant bit Wink
Am now trying the Miller diesel treatment to see if the claims for improved performance etc. are true. Working out the costs, it is cheaper than the “premium” fuels and if it has the same overall effect of reducing smoke/noise etc then it may be worth the 2.5p litre extra. (Premium fuels can be anywhere between 5 & 10+ pence a litre more expensive in this area) Not sure if anyone else has experience of these treatments? I know it may seem a bit illogical, but I would rather stick with a proprietary treatment than “risk” 2-stroke or ATF in the fuel.

I have also tried the millers DPS4 (or ECOpower as its now called), at the recommendation of a few people. It did take about 3 tanks (1300 miles) at a double dosage before I noticed a reduction in smoke levels. As soon as you stop using it, becomes smokey within a tankful of running about. 2 stroke oil takes about 2 tanks to clean up, and 2-3 tanks sometimes before it gets smokey again...

As for 'premuim' fuels, noticed no difference at all, either about town or on daily commute (with CC set on motorway). Just fill up with the cheapest derv i can find at the time Thumbs Up
