Fuel consumption
Hi,
I have a 2014 D4 HSE Lux which I've had for 5 years.
The first year the fuel consumption was around 32mpg solo and towing around 24-25mpg.
After the first year the consumption for either solo or towing dropped to 16-18mpg, and still the same. The fuel filter hadn't been changed, but even after that was done, the consumption remains the same. Nobody seems to know what's wrong, not even mechanics. Any ideas apart from maybe injectors.

What fuel do you use? V-power fuel gets about 3-5mpg more mileage on my D4. Accelerates a lot smoother also. I'd recommend perhaps a carbon clean and check the condition of the spark plugs!Discovery 4

Hi, thanks for your reply.
În answer to your question about what type of fuel, it makes no difference whether it's Shell, BP, or any supermarket and in answer to your second comment, it's a diesel engine, so it doesn't have spark plugs. No Discovery has spark plugs.

If you get the same mpg with supermarket fuel and Shell, then I'd say it's an operator induced problem.
Normal Shell and BP will always improve mpg, their respective 'power' fuels options should even improve mpg more.
Apologies if this sounds harsh, but many thousands of 'petrol heads' (including diesel) will testify that performance and economy are inproved using these brands, and tests by many different sources also back this up.

But there's a huge difference between 32mpg and 16-18mpg, that surely can't be down to what fuel the OP is using.Heaven doesn't want me, and hell is afraid I'll take over.

That really is my problem. Whether there is/isn't better consumption with she'll etc or not, I think a drop from 32 to 18mpg is quite a drop, in one go, but thanks for all your chat

Do you have a diagnostics tool? Might be worth checking injector values as you may be burning the fuel inefficiently if they're not working well.
Also clean the various sensors, MAF etc. I have a well worn 2005 and get 25+ from it, you should be getting better than that.
Otherwise, fault codes and a GAP tool are your friend for seeing what's going on.2022 BMW i4 M50. Bought Oct 2022. 10,200 miles and counting...

Thanks for your advice. I had thought about the injectors but will need to get them checked.

could anything be binding slightly and causing drag?..... brakes, transmission etc ?
are you losing fuel somewhere through a split pipe or connector ?
im no mechanic by any stretch so just throwing a few more juggling balls into the mix.2011 D4 XS 305 MY12 - gone but not forgotten

Hi Andy,
Have you tried dipping your tank to see how much fuel is left? i have a similar issue where mine likes to throw up a low fuel warning light and mpg is 23-24 (apparently) but if you leave it for a bit and switch back on fuel light goes away and range increases, its a strange one and im thinking it could be getting misread, perhaps its the same for you? computer not reading it correctly and you actually have more fuel?
(Not a mechanic just my input)

I suspect you have but ….
And as a comparison we get 26mpg on our 2015 D4 SE.
