Fuel consumption research

The only "fly in the ointment" with the D3 TDv6 Auto is the very disappointing fuel consumption. Ours is averaging less than 22mpg. I am starting to wonder whether there is actually a problem with my vehicle. Can I ask members of this forum to help me with a bit of research ? The test is to see what fuel consumption you achieve at a steady 75mph (probably equivalent to a "true" 70mph) using cruise control on a reasonably level motorway. Once you find yourself on a suitable bit of road, set cruise, use + and - to get to read 75mph average speed read out on the trip then zero the fuel consumption. After a few minutes it will give the average mpg. After 15 minutes of these conditions my vehicle was reading 23.1 mpg. I would have expected much more. Indeed I recall seeing somewhere on this board that someone was achieving 39 mpg in a similar test..... Makes me think ours may have a problem, but will know for sure if a few of you can advise on your equivalent read outs.

Yep that was me, got the photo to prove it. BUT that was at 56 mph. I did a trip to Edinburgh and back a few days ago, and it averaged well over 24 at about 80mph.

Heres the post I made http://disco3.web-rover.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=84

Heres the other one http://disco3.web-rover.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=45

Mine averages about 24-26 at that speed, but it does depend on the road, ie hills & traffic. It is also getting better the more miles I do.

I agree with Gareth - careful consistent speed can give amazing results - I too have seen (& photographed) the magic 39mpg (didn't quite get to 39.9 though)!
More typical on long motorway runs averaging 80mph or so, I am consistently getting between 26 & 27mpg. Town (not city) driving averages around 24.
Almost 6000 on the clock and performance is improving at a rate equal to the increased software glitches also being experienced!!

I'm driving our TDV6 manual transmission without regard for fuel consumption on lots of small journeys of 10-15miles and the data screen reads 22.1 mpg. I'm sure motorway driving would see this rise to 26-27 mpg.

Yep, motorway driving returns 26mpg. I'm not sure how to drive it more carefully without creating gridlock Very Happy .

Lr3 HSE USA... travel a lot. average speed is now 44.7 mph and fuel economy is only 13.8 mpg, when it is rated at 14 and 16 mpg. Hope this improves.

Now getting average of 29.7 MPG from my TDV6 manual. Drive relatively normally (for a Brit - which means fairly fast) and do the odd blast. Mainly keep the revs in the torque band.

Have been using Esso Energy fuel (new around here and a little like the BP Ultimate but far cheaper) mainly.

Improved over the miles - completed 5K miles now.

Average is now 25mpg, TDV6 auto, 6k on the clock, mainly cruise control 80mph on motorway. Yesterday spent tearing around the hills in the Lake District in a rush, Did not reduce the computer average, but needed filling up after 350 miles. I normally get 380 - 400 on a tank.

Just completed a run from Ludlow to Warrington and then Manchester and back... heavy traffic into Manchester and then out (due to M6 closure).

Still averaged 29.3 MPG (zero'd trip this morning).

Tank will do around 580 miles according to range and ODO trip added together. Gone up from 530-40 since new.

5.1K on clock.

It seems that manuals get the best part of 30mpg whilst autos are very lucky to see 25mpg, more commonly 22mpg. That is about a 25% penalty for using an auto. Is that a normal difference between manual & auto ?

I use an auto TDv6 and it is one of the sweetest autos I have ever used. It changes gear cleanly and evenly, with no hunting around, so I would have expected it to be pretty fuel efficent with little fuel penalty between the auto and manual. Can anyone confirm or explain this apparently large fuel effiency gap ? In the Disco TD5 Landrover remapped the ECU for the auto's after 2002, giving the engine about 15% more torque and bhp than a manual. They did this because they said the auto box was stronger than the manual. I guess the real reason was that the auto sucked up so much power that it made the pre 2002 vehicle feel like a Massey Ferguson....

I'm getting around 22mpg around town/short journeys. I did a trip to Birmingham. 75mpg on motorways with a few miles of slow stuff at either end. Averaged 50mph overall and got 27mpg overall.

My fuel consumption is shocking. HSE TDV6.
On a run, at 69mph I can average 27mpg. At 75 this drops to 24mpg.
On short runs, stop start at traffic lights, 16 - 18 mpg. Makes me cry.
I am told it will improve.
