fuel contamination
Hi All,
I have a 2006 Discovery3 that has just been recovered and has been found to have contaminated fuel. The dealer tells me i need to replace the pump, the injectors, the fuel lines and filters etc etc at a cost of 4500 pounds. This all needs to be done to keep the warranty valid.
This all sounds a bit mad to me. Surely if the fuel system is drained and the fuel replaced with fresh fuel then the car should start and be fine.
not being a mechanic i am only guessing so your help and advice please........
Thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike ,
Dealers will want to change everything to cover themselves
Has the car actually been started/driven with the wrong fuel ? If driven a considerble way, possible damage to the HP pump as it doesnt get lubricated by the diesel, then possibly contaminating common rail , fuel lines and injectors with swarf.
The AA can drain out for approx £200 with a flush / additive at the roadside or home address but whilst its under warranty , LR have got you as soon as its back with them.

Hi Matt,
Yeah the dealer is telling me there is swarf in the system. Am thinking of taking to LR Specilist and just have him clean the system. will it need pump replacing do you think,
Cheers

andym, thats what i was going to say , if you have misfueled then the warrenty will be invalid unless you do as LR says to be honest. Thats what the insurance is for, they will cover it surley.
It would have been better if LR did'nt find out I guess

Landrover would see this as a self inflicted fault and would'nt cover it under the warranty.
If you let them carry the work out it would cost you dearly but would remain with the warranty , if they didnt carry the work out then any further engine problems would'nt be covered.
People seem to be jumping to conclusions here
Was it contaminated fuel (i.e. diesel with crap in it) or the wrong fuel (i.e. Petrol instead of Diesel)?
If contaminated then the supplying fuel company/station should be paying for the repair, if it's a mis-fuel then it's down to you to sort it though your insurance may well cover itThe End

no never had petrol in it... has crap deisel in it. The dealer said its like it has white sprit in it. The garage wont accept the claim as they had no other reports of the problem. the car broke down and was recovered a week before christmas and has only just had the dealer find the fault.... so time lapsed helps the case for the fuel garsge.

do you have the fuel receipt as that will show you what time you bought the fuel. Then speak to the recovery company and get them see if they can tell you what time recovery was booked? If then recovered straight to the dealer and you have all the timings a good barrister would run rings around them

Have you kept a sample of the fuel, might be an expert that can check it to see if it is proper
DERV or some mix of DERV & other stuff??? Just a thought but if you are looking to go after the garage it might need an expert report on the fuel.

Precisely, get an independent analysis of the fuel sample. It won't cost £4500!
