Fuel Filter & Fuel Pump Help Please

Hello

I was trying to locate the fuel filter today. I took off the 6 x 10mm bolts and removed the plastic gearbox cover. I followed the fuel lines along the chassis rail and they came into a thinish retanglular box. There was maybe 4 in / outs with push connectors. I presumed this was the fuel filter but when I took one of the connectors off a red liquid came out and fuel came out when i took off one of the other connectors.

Three questions really...

1) What is this "box" I was investigating?
2) Where is the fuel filter and how do you get to it?
3) Slightly unrelated but how do I get into the top of the fuel pumps so I can pump out the fuel tanks?

Thanks

Paul
