I parkd the D3 at work yesterday morning with just under a quarter of a tank in it, so approximately 100 miles left. I alwys park in the same place, on a slight slope facing downwards. When I left work and turned the ignition on, the low fuel warning light came on, the gauge didn't move and the range subsequently read zero. I started the car, knowing that there was fuel in there, and left. After about 9 miles and 15 minutes driving, the gauge had started to move back up, and a short while later (by the time I got to the petrol station) the low fuel light had gone back off.
Filled up, and the gauge was working as it should. Turn the ignition on, and the gauge shoots straight up to the correct level. On the way home the trip computer said I was mostly averaging 42mpg, and I know from past experience that this is totally incorrect, and should average out to about 32mpg by the time I get home.
Everything normal this morning, but one of the techs at work commented that a brake light as out. I have read in the past that brake light bulbs messing around can cause weird electrical problems - could it be something as simple as this? I spoke to Land Rover on my way home, and they thought it could be a possible fuel tank sender issue.
Any thoughts?
cheers Alex

Fault brake lamp bulbs can cause funny faults - usually more severe than this, but you never know.
For the sake of 2 minutes, why not just fit a new (original LR) brake bulb and see if it cures the problem? 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE Auto Buckingham Blue

I will be rplacing the bulb when it stops raining and I work out how to change them. Someone may have had a similar issue, everything seems to be ok since it happened. May have just been a glitch.

IIRC, there are two senders in the tank- it may be chafed wires or one becoming dislodged. Hope it's just the bulb/random glitch. Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana

Bulb changed, so will now monitor it. Car is going for service on Monday, so have asked them to look at this as well. Be interesting to see what happens tonight when I leave work.

Picked the car up yesterday from its service and everything I had asked them to look at was behaving perfectly (typical ). Stopped on the way home tonight and had just under quarter of a tank, and approximately 100 miles range left. Turned engine off, got back in and restarted and the fuel light was on and the gauge was reading zero.
Is this how it is supposed to be? In my mind it is not, as above a quarter of a tank the gauge springs up back to where it was before the car was turned off. This is the second time that this has happened. My M5 has a strange fuel pump configuration whereby this sort of thing can happen, but the gauge has overread and you are actually out of fuel.
what does your gauge do?
cheers Alex

Came out to the car this morning and had parked overnight facing upwards Turned ignition on and needle went straight up to where it was before I had stopped last night. Drove to work, parked on a slight slope facing forwards. Turned the engine off, then turned the igniton straight back on and the gauge was at the bottom reading zero as was the range as well!

Hi Alex,
zarnd wrote:what does your gauge do?
My gauge works exactly as you would expect....
When in work, I park on the flat and it reads identical when switching off and when later switching back on.
I also live on a hill and park uphill or downhill depending on whether or not I can be arsed to turn around before parking....
Either way, the gauge reads the same when switching off and back on...
I think the problem with your M5 is that it burns through petrol so fast that it doesn't give the petrol gauge time to move before it runs out 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE Auto Buckingham Blue

Good. It's only the second tank that this has been happening on. Alex
