Fuel prices are nuts! Can D3 run on alternative fuels?

With fuel prices as they are and a give thirsty 3 tonne truck sat on the drive what fuel options do I have?

Has anyone tried any alternative fuels?

Any Results? Pitfalls? Expectations?

I want to keep the fat lady singing but at these prices!!! Shocked

Just wondered what the possibilities (if any) were... Whistle

Yes And No..........

The D3 will run fine on 100% Bio, or a Bio mix, but it will dry the seals in the fuel system/pump resulting in a possible expensive replacement repair

Up to 5% bio-diesel according to Manual. Converting a diesel to LPG is technically possible but the cost would be so high you would need about 10,000,000 miles before it started to pay back!

I've just changed from a D1 V8 on LPG, and the "pence per mile" is working out about the same as the highly managed diesel is getting lots more miles from a gallon. I wonder how effective the "engine off when stop" on the Freelander really is, and whether it could be added to Discovery.

I keep looking at FL2, but the improvement in economy is marginal, certainly not enough to warrant selling my D3 at this point.

As for alternative fuels, I hear heating oil is presently 43p a litre, and thanks to the EU it's now low sulphur, so less of the tell-tale stink associated with heating oil of old. Or so a man tells me Laughing

A well known D3 guru, some say he likes a certain gin from India named after a blue corundum, reckons he gets 12 more statute miles from his imperial gallon in his FL2(v)!!! Whistle Whistle

According to my handbook (LRL 10 02 53 602) the V6 diesel engine IS NOT compatable with bio-diesel fuel Confused

Currently the Diesel on sale in the UK is 5% bio-fuel, with the Ultimates\V-Powers 7.5% bio-fuel and Diesel could become upto 30% bio-fuel by the end of the year.

Then I shall have to sue Land Rover if there was foreknowledge, or the fuel companies if not. Either way, someon (and it won't be me) is going to get Censored in the Censored Thumbs Up

Quite right. It's not as if the D3 is old technology, but the most important thing you really need to make it go will be the thing to make the vehicle obsolete, FUEL Evil or Very Mad

Is the D4 capable of running on more than 5% Bio?
