Fuel Tank Position

Hi All
Education time for me. I've been crawling around underneath and removed the front metal cover and the plastic one that shows the fuel filter. First question what is the unit above the fuel filter and to one side. It has cooling fins and is like a small box with pipes coming or going to it. Secondly is that the fuel tank positioned midway with a lenght of 4 feet or so. At a glance it looks like aother cover.
Thanks for any info.

Roger 47,
If you mean ,behind the filter, that would be the fuel cooler/heater,
depending on the climate, as it is cooled/heated from the engine water cooling
system. That would be for the pre MY 07 D3, but from the MY 07 on, the cooler
is still in the same place, just the filter has moved back closer to the tank.
As for the tank, being plastic, there is a steel protection plate as you describe
running inside of the right hand chassis rail.

Roger,
If it's any help; here's a snap of one:

Hi DrLex
Thanks for the pics. I've never seen a tank shaped like that before. I suppose it's all in the design of the vehicle.
