Fuel Tank Protector
I think maybe Slimer or AndrewS can def answer this one as I know they have already done it......BUT..... has anybody attempted to remove the plate for re-shaping using axle stands and laying on their back.
I haven't got access to a vehicle lift....but have been informed the plate needs changing......My view is remove it and bang it out before buying a new one at £280.00 + VAT supplied and fitted.
I just need to know if anyone has done the removal as said on their back.Formerly Blakey
I wouldn't even consider it doing it that way, it's a two man job and you need room to move. Suggest you have a chat with Andrew or Ken about maybe using their lifts
Who says it needs replacing? The End

Approved Repair centre said so......When I asked if it cannot just be removed and straightened they told they could not do that, they could only replace it as they are LR approved.Formerly Blakey
Sounds like a call to Ken or Iain to see if they can advise"To finish first, one first has to finish ...."

Yes it can be repaired or strengthened. Its 2 or 3mm thick pressed steel
Make sure you have an empty tank.
Remove the rear bolts loosen the fronts.
At the rear place a ratchet strap between the plastic tank and metal tank guard. Attach the ratchet strap ends to a solid fixing and take the slack up, this will support the rear of the tank.
Replace the rear bolts (loose) remove the fronts.
Do the same at the front with a ratchet strap.
Remove the loose rear bolts.
Result = one fuel tank still in place with one guard on the deck In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Thanks Andrew and the thers for your input on this.
AndrewS.....At first I assumed the tank was held in place with straps and that the protector plate was just that, but thanks to Slimer he pointed out that the tank is actually supported by the protector plate which having read your "how to do and what you done" in one of your others posts I was happy with that side of things.....BUT was concerned if it was possible to be removed without having the vehicle up in the air using a 4 post lift or the such like, but would it be possible to do it on axle stands to gain a bit extra space and struggle doing it laying on my back with my head under and my feet sticking out.....Even if possible I would still be concerned of the plate weight and it would be no point in dropping it, banging it out and re-fitting it with out having it strengthened so I would not have to go through the whole procedure again in time.
Thanks for everybody who has input their ideas and thoughts.
Gonna have to re-think this one as even when dropped still gotta transport the plate to get it strenghtened, painted, returned and refitted. Might have to arrange a D3 Event for "Tank Plate removal, strenghtening and refitting" at AndrewS's facilities .Formerly Blakey

Yes you could do it on axle stands, but it will be a pain and possibly unsafe. The plate is not that heavy I would recommend that for ease you lower and raise it with a trolley jack.
You are welcome to come to my workshop I will sort it for you and weld the strengthening plates on for a price In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Myself and Marcon dropped the tank out of mine on a fuel station forecourt with no jacks or stands but in offroad height using two jerry cans on their side.I was a pure bitch to do and I dislodged the fuel sender aswell.Take Andrew up on his offer if I were you.
