A funny thing happened on the way to Devon....

There I was, brain in neutral, just leaving the obligatory queue at the end of the M42 and accelerating away when I get a message on screen saying 'HDC not available'. I was surprised but not terribly perturbed as the M5 is not generally renowned for its dramatic descents. It was however shortly followed by a 'Gearbox fault' sign with a flashing 'D' on the display (there there is usually a D or an S etc) and an amber triangle.

The car was running OK so I just continued my journey as none of the signs was in red and indeed got down to Tavistock with out problem. Until I wanted to reverse that was. The lights round the gear knob had also gone out and would the Censored move? Not a hope. Seeing as reversing was the only way out I had to turn off the engine, cross my fingers and hope.

It fired up and has run faultlessly since. I did get about 3mpg better on the return run but that is all I have noticed. I have done a search on here and not found this before.

Any explanations or experience from anyone?

Ah it's a Land Rover, they do funny things. Mine had had various bongs and faults showing on the dash once or twice. No serious problems though . If in warranty though may as well get it checked. Especially as it was affecting your gearbox, it may be more serious. However it could just be a "Land Rover" electronic gremlin! Rolling Eyes

Does your car have the rotary knob?

I had trouble getting into reverse with mine at times. I realised I have to lift the knob, but not always, or at least that's what it seems! Confused

Yup it is a rotary knob but mine usually flicks over a treat both before and since, just not then. I did give it a jolly good woggle I can assure you.

If it's anything like the D3, removing a random capacitor on the gearbox solved this one for me...!

I think this "Gearbox Fault" message is endemic to LR!

In my last FFRR I was continually getting the message and the dealers never really sorted it, but it never caused a problem. Like you, I stopped the car, switched off and the fault cleared! Evil or Very Mad

The only time I get the reverse problem is when I am parking in a tight place and I need to for back and forth. It sometimes refused to go into R and that is when I consciously lifted the knob and I've never had a problem since in 3 months since. Thumbs Up

Un-related (ish) - very occasionaly the info screen goes completely blank, no radio, no nav - nothing
Spookily - changes itself to MW seconds before it sulks
Let the car go to sleep - bingo - comes back up again

It's all a bit like our PC's in the office.....every now and again they forget where they are (Dementia!!) and turning them off and on again nearly always does the trick! Wink

Technology is a wonderful thing
Need to get mine looked at in next service - sods law means it will go off permanently when really needed - like on long journey
Once drove from Dundee to Stockport in Cavalier that I forgot to take the little stereo pop out panel with me when I went up to pick it up
A very, very long and boring journey

There's been posts like this for the D3. One of the messages was probably transmission fault and limited gears available. Hence increased mpg and no reverse..

It's just the the knob wouldn't turn in any direction until I turned off and then restarted the engine. I don't think it was a reverse issue.

How so?

Not that I don't believe you but can't work out why it might be.

Certainly a candidate along with battery etc Laughing

Worth getting checked out if worried but more than likely a temporary gremlin.

Most electrical gremlins seem to be put down to the poor much maligned brake peddle switch. I'm sure the gremlins get put into the car at the last station on the assembly line in case they escape. In the words of I Robot, ghosts in the machine. Thumbs Up
