Gas Question
We have a couple of Camping Gaz 907 cylinders that we use with our two burner gas stove and gas fridge (via a tee-connector). I last bought a refill around three years ago, for about 12 quid IIRC. Anyway, I went into our local garden centre to get a refill today and was quoted £31.95! The owner, who I know, said that prices had rocketed at the start of the first cold winter in 2010, and had never really fallen back.
Anyway, she recommended propane as an alternative. £15 for a slightly larger refill, plus £7 for a new regulator. This seems like a good idea. We camp well into the cold weather, and I understand that propane performs better in cold weather compared to butane.
My question is, will it be OK to run the existing fridge and cooker on propane, assuming I have the correct regulator?
All advice gratefully received.

I'm no expert but I see a lot of 47Kg propane bottles by Hobby Caravans on the verges from time to time so I can only assume it works!26 and on the 4th LR..

There are two types of LPG - Propane and Butane. They have similar properties but different applications. They are not interchangeable due to the different operating pressures and burner settings required. Valves and fittings are also different to avoid confusion or accidental use of the wrong type of LPG.

I have used Propane gas in many caravans over the last 40 years. Never had any problems. Make sure you have a propane regulator, usually red in colour. Much better size than the Camping Gaz.

I needed a refill on our Camping Gaz 907 cylinder mid last week at the campsite we use in Dartmouth.
Their price was £23.50, so I'd say your garden centre is a bit expensive.
NasherHeaven doesn't want me, and hell is afraid I'll take over.

I just swapped my 2 butane cylinders for the new Calor Lite propane cylinders. Just fitted a new regulator and everything works fine in the caravan, about £20 for 6kg cylinder fill. The Calor Lite bottles have a built in gauge which is quite useful but no substitute for picking them up and shaking!

Same here - just swapped two 7kg Butane for two 6kg Calor lightweight Propane - with a new regulator - not a problem.
Quite a few of the caravan dealers will tell you Calor wont do the swap (as there was a shortage of lightwieght bottles), but find a Calor center directly, and they will.

Thanks for the useful responses folks. I'll be getting a propane regulator, so sounds like I should be OK.
Regarding pricing, that kind of thing does tend to be more expensive up our way. Higher transport costs and less competition I suppose. I might shop around a bit though, although the lady at the garden centre has said she'll be happy to take my butane cylinder in exchange for the propane one.
I know all about the problems with butane in the cold, having tried using the flat cartridge stoves but I didn't realise until I had a good look at the cylinder,that Camping Gaz is pure butane. I thought it was a butane/propane mix like the small coleman cylinders.

Thanks for the link. To be honest, we probably don't use enough gas for it to be cost effective, plus the nearest refill station is a 25 mile drive!

Hi, propane is fine for all the appliances as long as the regulator is the correct one.
Propane really has no negative points at all, it's the perfect all rounder for caravaning and camping.If in doubt, It's time for a Cuppa.

I'm worried now. I'm sure the dealer our van came from said that the bulkhead fitted regulator was fine to use with both propane and butane. Did I mis-hear that? I'm using the red lightweight propane at the moment with no obvious issues. Do I need to check that I have the correct regulator?
