Gearbox oil change

Hi all

I’m looking to change the oil and filter on my manual d3 2.7 2005 model

I see there’s a new type that inserts before the sump for an easy job

But looking online I only see for automatic?

Is it the same or do I need a specific one please?

Maybe anyone recommend a listing with the correct type and amount of fluid?

TIA

This is for reference: https://www.advancedfactors.co.uk/manual-gearbox-1593-c.asp
The recommended oil is: https://www.advancedfactors.co.uk/adv904-f...5553-p.asp

Off the top of my head the amount required is 1.6L

Hope this helps

Sorry I don’t understand the manual gearbox reference? The part I understand to be needed is not on the diagram. I thought It was a pan underneath that has a filter. Remove with bolts and cut a pipe. Then insert new one which is an upgraded design. A separate filter inside a pan?

The listings all say automatic gearbox. Probably a dumb question but is it the same part and process for manual too?

No thats only on autos where the use the oil for drive and for hydraulic control so it needs filtering.
The manual gearbox just needs to be drained and refilled

Oh really that’s a relief then! So just the same as oil change?

Yes, sorry I would have thought the link for the reference would have given a clear indication that there was/is no oil filter/sump pan like the autos.

Updating this!

Gear oil was almost empty when I drained it about half a cup came out!!!!

Filled with 1.6l of stuff from AF

Drove around for 5 minutes and checked all gears and works fine

Much easier than the fuel filter dilemma!

Next up cam belt!

I am curious to know how your oil escaped. Surely, it was not previously drained without refilling correctly.

Yeah it is odd - I’m not a pro but I’m pretty certain I did it correctly.

Saying that, I did do it after driving for 10 minutes before hand 😳🤔 hope that wasn’t bad?

Now I’m worrying I’ve done something wrong haha

But maybe it was just not done correctly or is escaping possibly? I’ll have to check again in a few months and redo it? Or is that ott?

Ideally the oil needs to be hot when draining so driving for ten minutes is good

Come to think of it, I did spot a pipe running down the side of the gearbox oil fill area, with a connection that did seem to be wet (did a look around whilst fixing something else)

I’ll have to inspect where the pipe is coming from and also get a picture. Maybe it was a leaky gear oil line and my maintenance luckily got there before a break!? Or would there have been a light on the dash first?

Knew it felt too easy a job!

Hi can anyone recommend the cheapest place for manual 2005 D3 gear oil please?

Looking now it’s £13 on AF but delivery is £10

Wondering if anywhere else like eBay has cheaper alternative?

If your Disco is needing a service soon, then it’s worth just ordering a full service kit and adding the gearbox/diff oils.

Or, if your doing the gearbox, order the front, rear diff and transfer case oils also. Make good habit of just doing them all together then.

Halfords probably do GL4 75w gear oil for £13 a litre, or you could try Opie Oils eBay store.
