| General Grabber AT2s versus BFG A/T |
|
Any opinions on which of these 2 tyres to fit on a disco 3 - 18''? Disco used 80% for tar with the normal weekend and holiday trips planned off road. Little to no mud requirement. D3 SE '06. Dual battery system. Outback RR. Escape Gear seat covers

I drive on my D3 17" AT² and I am very pleased with them,
friend of my is running the BFG AT's 18" on his td4 Defender and he is very pleased with them.
I must admit that I do prefer the look of the 18" BFG's....then look more square & chunky then the AT² in my opinion.
If I had 18-ers I would go for the BFG's. Disco 3 TDV6 Aut. 7 seat, Zambezi silver, Privacy glass, Rosen A9 DVD, Tow-kit, K&N airfilter, Frontrunner Windcheetah + 4xHella Comet 550, tailgate ladder, 5 breaklights  , Performance BB6 17" + Duratracs 256/70R17, RLD Skid-plate, Traxide second battery setup, Lightguards, BAS EGR's blank kit, BAS Silicone hose, Black bonnet decal,

Do they do BFGs on 18"? 2020 SDV6 D5 HSE, Carpathian Grey +
2022 Tesla Model Y LR... almost Carpathian Grey

Yes, but ISTR that they're somewhat oversized (265/65 R18?) which means they need a separate homologation in some countries (like Spain for example  ).
The also foul the wheel arches in access mode when turning lock to lock (unless you have shortened height rods or software recalibration). I think they fit ok in the spare wheel well, but may possibly need the pressure lowering to fit correctly - not 100% sure about this...
I personally like the look of the BFG more than the AT2, but to be honest, the AT2s are great all-round tyres and are very well behaved (more so than the BFGs) on-road.

BFG have one great advantage over AT2's - sidewall strength is far superior on the BFG's - otherwise I'd say the were fairly evenly matched as far as the tread pattern/traction goes.
Also, I used BFG's on a 300TDi D1 and they seemed to last longer mileage wise, but I suspect that's alot to do with the extra weight the D3 carries in comparison. LRs are a fond memory, apart from the maintenance.

Yep - I forgot to mention this....although AT2s are much stronger than any road tyre, they are not a match for the reinforced sidewalls of the BFG. I've seen quite a few AT2s ripped by rocks.
Also ISTR that the load index of the 265/65 R18 BFGs is 122 or something like that - they approved for some serious weight.
You mention that you have little to no mud requirement which is lucky as almost all AT tyres are crap in thick mud anyway. 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE Auto Buckingham Blue

As mentioned, the BFG a/ts are more puncture resistant than the AT2s. However, you might want to look at the Cooper Zeon LTZ or Nitto Terra Grappler in the same 18" sizes, which are more modern A/T tyres and good on all surfaces.
