20" or 19" wit General Grabber AT3

20" or 19" wit General Grabber AT3

Tyres and wheals advice
Ok i have D4 it is currently on 255/50/r20 Tyres and wheals

I am after some advice.
I want to put on General Grabber AT3's but i think there is only 2 sizes in a 20" Rim. And non are the same size as the originals.

So my Dilemma is do i put on 20's or do i get new Rims of another size.
For example 19' rims.

I use the car mainly on motorways but occasionally off-road.

Have limited experience of both D3, and the AT3s, but I'm finding them great so far - better grip than the BFG All Terrains I had on my D2.

I'm running exactly the same wheel / tyre combo as the post above.

Just did a motorway run to Manchester and back on Saturday, and they gave me 30mpg per the dash computer. In 05 tdv6 auto.

Which includes about half an hour of B roads from & too the hills where I live.

If I'm honest, I think I'm seeing about 22-23 locally where I'm up and down valleys all the time.

Just an update for everyone.
I had a set of GG AT3's fitted by the great guys down at AJS (great bumf of guys and did a brilliant job thanks). In fact i had 5 fitted as the sold me a full size rim at a good price to enable me to get rid of the stupid space saver.

Anyway. I don't hear any extra road noise and actually the MPG so far seems the same.
Thing is they are about £40 a corner cheaper than the Originals. So that is £160 less on a set. And they should last longer anyway. So even if slightly less MPG doesn't really matter.

Key thing is they look great.

So can highly recommend the 255 / 55 / 20's

Looking good.

Anyone know about the technical grading difference between a wet weather B rated (Scorpion) and an E rated (Grabber). Is it just a wet stopping distance or is it more involved?

Interested in moving to something like this, but my truck spends the majority of its life on the roads as a school bus. Shocked

I'm not sure you can really compare tyres between manufacturers, although I'm happy to be shown otherwise. Each does its own tests and although they follow a regulated procedure, they are done at different locations and times against different reference tyres. Even within a given range e.g. Pirelli Scorpions, different tyre sizes get different results - wide tyres are generally worse at resisting aquaplaning, for example.

Also bear in mind that D and G are not used in the wet grip classification (even though they are on the label). This means that a C and E tyre might actually be very close in performance. Confusing, eh?

Winter tyres don't get a separate set of tests because it's hard to test a winter tyre in controlled winter conditions. So winter tyres look bad compared to summer tyres because they are designed to meet a different set of requirements and this impacts their summer tyre comparison performance. As you might expect.

In summary, take the EU labels in to consideration but don't base your buying decision on them solely. Looking at comparison tests by magazines etc. would seem to be a better option.

Oh, and if you're interested in a tyre for occasional off road use that isn't just in mud, then the Pirelli Scorpion ATR is an excellent all round tyre. Thumbs Up Great on rocky lanes - better than the Grabber at resisting damage it seems, will get through mud but not in the same way as a "chunkier" tyre such as the Grabber.

Hi,

Do you have any images of these fitted, and any more feedback after a bit more time on the road?

I am torn between duratrac and at3's - any thoughts on the best options?
