Go on I dare you!

Close your eyes and open your mind, go back in time.

Before Playstations , X Boxes and DVD’s
Before modified replica guns, Ecstasy and Cannabis factories .
Before the innocence of life was ravaged by crazed adults. Go way back…back to your childhood.
I’m talking about hide and seek on the back streets of your home.
The corner shop, hopscotch, Butterscotch, skipping, handstands ,tin can squat, chasing each other playing tig , football with a tennis ball and garden gates the goals.
Bulldog, Beano, Twinkle and roly-poly, Hula Hoops, jumping in enormous puddles,
Building dams by the old broken water pipe on the field near your house.
The smell of the sun and fresh cut grass, Bazooka Joe bubble gum. An ice cream cone on a warm summer night from the van that plays “la cucaracha or Match of the day theme tune. – 99’s,
Screwballs or a cider lolly!

Wait…watching Saturday morning matinee and cartoons at the cinema…short commercials, the double deckers,
Roadrunner, Tom and Jerry, captain caveman, a black and white Robinson Caruso series, Flashing blade, Champion the wonder horse, why don’t you!
Staying up late for Match of the day and Starsky and Hutch.

When around the corner seemed far away, and going into town seemed like going somewhere?
Nearly every street had a fish shop and a corner shop with a Halfpenny tray, the local laundrette.
The pop wagon, the coal man, the milkfloat, the rag and bone man’s cry.
A million midge bites, wasp and bee stings. Sticky fingers, cops and robbers.
Cowboys and Indians, Zorro!
Climbing trees, building igloos out of tiny amounts of snow. Walking to school in deep snow !
Running till you was out of breath, laughing so loud
That your stomach hurt.
Jumping on the bed, pillow fights, spinning around getting dizzy and falling
Down was the cause for the giggles.
Being tired from playing and being happy…. remember that!!
The worst embarrassment was to be picked last for a team. Water bombs were the Ultimate weapon; lollypop sticks in the spokes changed any bike into a powerful Motorbike.

Nearly finished, remember when…. there was only 2 types of trainers – Girls and Boys.
- Dunlop Green Flash and the only time you wore them was at school in the gym.
You knew every one on your street – and so did your mum and dad!
When nobody owned a pure breed dog.
When 5p was decent pocket money, when you’d reach into a muddy gutter for a 1p Piece.
When everyone’s mum was at home when you got back from school, and it was magic when your dad would remove his thumb for fun!!!
When any parent could discipline any kid, or feed him or use him to carry the Groceries home and not even the kid thought a thing about it.
When being sent to the head masters office was nothing compared to what was
Going to happen when you got home. Basically we lived in fear of our lives, not
Because of drugs, gangs or drive by shootings, but out of the respect for our parents and grand parents

Didn’t that feel good? Just think back and say, yeah I remember all that.
Remember when…decisions were made by going “eeny-meeny-miney-mo”
“Race issues” meant who can run the fastest?
“Money issues” were handled by who was the banker in “monopoly”
Having a weapon in school meant you had been caught using a catapult.
Nobody was as pretty as your mum; scrapes and cuts were kissed and made better,
And taking drugs meant orange-flavoured chewable aspirin. And ice cream was
Considered to be a basic food group.
Abilities were discovered because of a “dare” or “double-dare”.
When you were the worst tormentor, but also the fiercest protector of your sister.
If you can recall these snippets or even some of them then you have lived!!!
Take time to have a break from our “grown-up” existence.
I believe that every human has a finite number of heart-beats. I don't intend to waste any of mine running around doing exercises.

I strongly beleive that as a child of the 70's, without all the gadgets n toys that I had a BETTER life, we could go out n play for ages and be safe.

Food from the ground like potatoes tasted earthy
white Dog Poo
Watch out Watch out Humphry is about
Tiswas
Runaround
99 cones were huge
Wagon wheels were massive
fizzy drink quattro
spangles

And proper 6ft plus Bobbies walking each and every street

OK - so I'd have no job but ... we'd be having this conversation in the pub, I'd still have a colour telly (just smaller) and the three channels wouldn't show reality TV sh*t, Series III was the LR order of the day, roads were quieter, Tories were in power, we still made things in this country (although the cars were mostly tinworm attractants), I could be uncontactable if I wanted (my avoiding answering the Trimphone), you could get milk with cream on the top ... and on and on.

So yes Rich I think I could - why what would STOP you? Wink

And way before LR conceived the D3, the original 7 seater (or however many you needed it to be) was the mk1 escort estate, how many of us sat in the boot as kids Thumbs Up

Agreed for some - although replying in jest, I'm trying NOT to take the childs view back then - speak to anyone of around 60-odd (who would have been adult back then) and I think its true. Sad

The 60's/70's were the point in the UK where pretty much everyone reached a civilised existance, all had running water and electricity, welfare state caught people, and employment was reasonably good. We were still an innovative nation with standing in the world, look at what was changing, what we did, what changed for the good - and it all sort of ground to a halt in about... well mid 80's perhaps - and slowly but surely we've been sucked into an inexorable immovable swamp of Political Correctness, Health & Safety, an inability to do anything because of Planning and Enquiries and Court Cases, Costs Spiralling Out of Control for any kind of Major Infrastructure Change, Wasting Money on things (and jobs) which achieve nothing. And the whole claim culture? And then there's Europe - the root of (most) all evils...

To get me wrong, many things are a whole lot better now - but on balance, for the majority? Neutral
