As far as I understand, all your bulbs/reflectors must be in working order at all times. You don't have to carry spares bulbs, but if a bulb fails AND you get caught AND you have no means to replace the broken bulb .... then you could face more than a fine. (car towed / impounded until you can get the bulb fixed)
Despite the cost of living, it remains as popular as ever!

Technically, you only need one high viz vest, but practically, you need one for every person who gets out of the car if it is stopped. So given that the recommendation for when you are broken down at the roadside is for everyone to get out of the car and wait a safe distance away, then you really should have one each.

The instructions for adjusting the Xenons are in the user manual, but there's also some photos on the forum somewhere if you search for them.

One thing you should NOT take - any speed camera detector / radar detector. The French plod take a very dim view of it and both you are your car are likely to be impounded if caught with it in the vehicle. Shocked Shocked

The jury is out about GPS and maps with speed camera locations but think those are still 'safe' at the moment.

Confused

Those fall under the "good idea to have" bracket rather than the "must have" one.

One other thing - you should have your insurance certificate with you as well.

The law is very clear :
Only the driver must have a high viz vest and you must have one warning triangle in the car.

I always think that it is worth taking the spare ignition key,in case the one in use suffers a mishap, or "dies"

The Police are also very sniffy regarding UK drivers exceeding the speed limits.

Just driven down the A26 and there are herds of gendarmes on motorbikes loitering under bridges pulling over speeding rosbifs.

take a spare door mirror glass.

i locked horns with a french van on a narrow road and the left hand side glass popped out. Fortunatly it didnt break and i managed to secureit back in with some insulation tape. if it had broken id have been stuffed as i couldnt see out the back window and was towing a trailer.

I also took a spare suspension compressor - but i didnt need to use that Thumbs Up

as a basic kit you need :

2 triangles + 1 extra if towing
hivis vests for ALL occupants
bulbs
fuses
Registration Docs
MOT certificate
Insurance Docs

thats for Spain but i think they are a bit stricter than France who only require the driver to have a HiVis.

we dont need HiVis in the UK - we have our own personal TrafficWombles who appear from nowhere and close the motorway to make sure we are kept safe Thumbs Up
