Wheels being stolen

Just a quick thought,
does anybody know how secure the Landrover security wheel nuts are? Are they easy to remove (not to much info please)? The unlocking tool has a letter on it - does this mean that there are only 26 variables? How easy it is to buy a full set A-Z?

Am having problems sleeping at night.....

My friend bought his D3 back in December 2006, I bought mine in July 2007, and we have the same wheel nut key pattern... Shocked

Atleast I know where to go when I lose mine, I suppose....

Even if they've got your locking wheel nut key, they've still got to jack it up to remove.
As already discussed [in depth] on this site, jacking up a D3 is not the easiest and safest thing to do without a proper jack and knowledge of the D3's suspension settings.
Is it really worth the hassle when they can nick the wheels off an X5 much easier?

Good point Ronp, I guess a not d3-experienced thief will be suprised about the car's articulation and will find his jack too small for the job...

I've taken by locking studs off. They're unreliable.

I reckon any thief who manages to lift 2.7 tonnes of D3 on my drive with three large dogs biting his ass deserves the soddin' wheels.

Spare wheel theft

Kev,

I'm interested in what you say about protecting the spare wheel against theft with plywood and have searched in the forum for it but cannot find a reference.

Can you very kindly give a reference to the article which describes it?

Many thanks,

Stephen

My co supplies the LR factory (via there sub supplier) with locking nut in batches of the same type, so you get a few days build of vehicles all with the same locking nuts, and yes there are only a couple of dozen permutations

The D3 lockers are much better than the D2, and I believe achieve a high anti theft rating. (Both made by ATP in Northampton)

The Paddy Hopkirk - McGard design as used by Ford and many others to me are a better design, and just as anti theft.

I had locking nuts. Then had a puncture Easter weekend in Dublin. The removal tool stripped the nut .Tried 3 LR dealers , no go, so I made it back to Anglesey on two puncture squirt cans , very slowly.

There I was told up to 7 day wait for main dealer to sort.

Then a very helpful man at a tyre fitter changed the tyre in situ - result - full speed back to London.

The LR dealers all told me they had seen the same stripping before . I had the nuts changed to ordinary ones and will never have them again. Also where I had my STs fitted they told me those nuts were always a problem - and when was the last time you saw any car up on bricks ?- everyone has alloys now.
