Just been given a new MacBook Pro 17" alluminium lump ...
As a PC man for many many years I'm wondering if this is going to be useful
What are the advantages / disadvantages ?

You can use XP or Vista at the same time as running OSX, this can be done by using a virtual machine or if both aren't needed at the same time using boot camp. I have been running my mac for 18 months and to my mind if you are really techy then there may not be as many advantages as to a mere mortal (I'm the latter) I have found no slowing of my machine, it is very stable, it does what it should do with no fuss, 90% of the computer world hates you
ISTR that PC Pro voted the MBP as the best laptop for running Vista on! When anything is new it takes a time to adapt but they are very easy to use. Enjoy DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone

Bodsy, you won't get on with it at all - best pass it on to me "To finish first, one first has to finish ...."

Like someone said, if you are willing to sit and play about with Firewalls, preferences, drivers, IP settings and all that crap for about an hour a day - then no doubt there are 100 PCs out there that will blow the socks off a Mac technically.
If like most normal people you want something that works, is brilliantly intuitive and is just so cool it could freeze the balls off a badger - then Macs are the way forward.
Not sure why anyone would run Vista on it though - all Vista's good points are nicked from OSX anyway.
So to sum up - GIVE IT TO ME PLEEEEEEEEASE!

That doesn't compute !!!!!!! Vista has good points
First program that I have ever known where the company was so embarassed it offered some old sofware (XP) in exchange if the buyer wasn't happy.
Does anyone know what the current state of Vista is like as we are moving over to it in September

That's nearly £2,000 worth of computer you've been given 8)
If you're not familiar with the Mac OS why not install Windows on it as well to start with while you get used to OS X. If you use Parallels or VM Ware you can run both OS's at the same time and switch between them seemlessly. Using Boot Camp still gets you Windows, but you need to re-boot the machine every time you want to change OS's.
Once you get used to the Mac OS, I'd be surprised if you didn't use it most, if not all of the time. iLife is a great suite of programs (included with any Mac) and the screen on the 17" MacBook Pro should be nothing short of stunning.

Vista is ok if you can get drivers for all your peripherals, printers etc. If not, then xp pro all the way until windows 7 is sorted.
Don't like macs myself, over priced and under powered IMHO.
Both have thier fans though, horses for courses. Bit like cars
Our cad software doesn't run on macs and I can't be doing with switching os's so we'll be sticking with the humble pc for a good while yet. Welcome "Lola"

i wouldn't put vista on it if i were you, contaminating a mac with that rubbish...
you must have some good friends to GIVE you a macbook pro....
you've got a computer that will last you for years and has enough power to run a small country.
lucky b ger and we are all just VERY jealous...

thanks for the feedback so far.
Yes, it was given to me as (apparently) I have to start supporting Mac's at work in the near future
£2k OMG
Seems it's the machine of choice for Media use ...
Have had a day to play around with it and it's growing on me some.
Not sure I can live without a 'proper' mouse though - this touchpad with no buttons is very strange!
It's got Office 2008 & Adobe CS3 suite installed so at least I'm familiar with those
Will try either bootcamp or parallels I think and run a copy of Windows 7 on it as well
One thing that impressed me was it's ability just to 'find' networks, internet connections etc. pretty 8)
Oh so if I get bored with it there's a few folk here that would releive me of it then?
Will have to see what software is about for it too.
BTW is it true you don't need AV software on a Mac?

I use VM Fusion as my work software is not mac compatible. It just sits there on the desktop and I flit in and out as and when I need it in the same way you switch between applications. BCC, not sure why you'd say macs are under powered as you can spec them to whatever level you want, just like you would a PC - but you are right it is very like cars sometimes you just like or don't like something!! I find it amazing that there is such ferocity in some peoples' views when looking around the internet DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone

I was only thinking to myself when I started this thread on how long it would be before 'mac' turned up

Meant to say underpowered compared to a pc of the same price.
