GPS, mapping - what is the answer...? |
|
Looking for some ideas / advice on a hand-held GPS (or equivalent).
I want something where I can load digital maps, waypoints, GPS compatible tracks etc. Both walking and driving (there's the compromise with SWMBO...). So it needs to be more than just road maps. i would like it to have turn directions etc. (There are more and more roadbooks and offroad routes in France and Spain that are becoming available as files).
This rules out installing a laptop mount and enabling it for GPS.
So I'm thinking something like a PDA will be the best option...? Or should I just go for a dedicated hand-held GPS?
Are there different formats meaning compatability could be an issue?
ideas on what mapping software?
Other ideas or options from those that use things like this...?
Thanks. The next American ex-pat that calls it a "truck" is going to find out what 2.7 tons feels like on their foot...

Mio P350 or equivalent newer version, also check out the new ViVo models by Mio. I've had one for years has travelled everywhere with me and never had a problem. You can get good protection cases. I use mine with Anquet, Memory map, Tom Tom and Mio map, all on different cards. Just have a screen mount for when in the car, and a protection case when out.
RLD bought a satmap PDA I think, they are a bit more expensive but are spash / dust proof maybe he will come alng with a review.
Ronp uses a different sort of PDA a Packard I think he'll be along as well Club Pie n Pea

I have the SATMAP and they are very good for walking and the like. The mapping is pricey and as far as i am aware they haven't got much for europe at the mo. However i believe the latest has Europe general mapping. They have a planning and map share facility on line and you can upload certain routes to the system. I find it an excellent bit of kit for walking and cycling, have used it on the pot noodle challenge in the car. Am still learning the system. Here is a link to the site so you can check it out.
