OK, 3 days worth of travels so a few pics and tales from NE Hokkaido.
Saturday was a bit of a mah day, we took this icebreaker (another transport first) to the end of the Shiretoko peninsular.

TBH we didn’t see much, we didn’t have binoculars with us and when wildlife was announced in Japanese only it was a case of trying to figure out where other peeps were looking. Basically if the ship listed to the right, look to the right. We saw a couple of pods of dolphins or porpoises, too far away to photograph, a seal (dead) and possibly some bears that may have been rocks. The smaller boats could get in close but the prospect of 3 3/4 hours on the deck did not fill us with joy. It was only low teens degC and windy, to get inside was lovely. Remember SWMBO has gone all tropical and anything with a 2 in front of the number means cardie on, 1 means fleece and cardie and single digits means she’s not getting out of bed.

This was under a volcano and looked like a lot of sulphur at the mouth of this stream. There are hot water waterfalls around but we needed a car to get there, the buses haven’t started yet.

Didn’t do much for the rest of the day, apart from soaking my weary bones in yet another ridiculously short tub.
Yesterday was a bus to Rausa at the other side of the peninsula, just too see what was there. There are whale watching trips leaving from there but there is no bus early enough to get to the morning trips and nothing late enough to get back from the afternoon trips. Not very joined up. We met a Mexican chap in the bus “station” on the way back and he’d just done the morning trip and saw over 50 killer whales. We’ll do that next time in Hokkaido but will have a car. Here is the first place on whole trip where we thought having a set of rental wheels would be a good idea.

Only pics from Rausu, just had a good wander down to the harbour and mooch around there. On the way down noted the tsunami escape route. Wot, no escalator?

Then to the Shiretoko visitors centre and a bit of hiking to the waterfall. Though at the time I didn’t notice the waterfall as I was too busy looking at the lava flows.

This is now bear country. Peeps hiking around here carry mini cow bells and canisters of bear mace, needless to say we had neither. We did review the safety instructions, however the miss out the step where I trip up SWMBO. Plus step 3 needs to say “once sufficient pics have been taken ............”

Needless to say we didn’t see any bears, not suprising as they have all found jobs in coffee shops.

Then off on the bus to go up to the 5 lakes area, only one of which you can see without paying a small fortune. Really nice board walk, protected by electric fences, out over the bamboo type grass. There was at least one deer munching away.

Lovely place, beautiful weather and total peace and quiet. Fantastic.

Then on to today. Bus back to the rail network and on to the fumarole fields at Mt Iwo that we skipped last week coz it was chucking it down. Close up pic of the massive sea defensive block they were making in the harbour area we looked down on from the hotel.

Prob one of the best places we’d visited in Japan, we virtually had the place to ourselves. Until a couple of tour buses arrived that is. Stunning place and you can get right UC&P with some of the vents. Well I could, SWMBO was a bit more sensible.
Then walk back to the train station and train back to Shari for this hotel. It was getting really hot and head was getting a bit fried so I had to wear SWMBO’s silly hat as I’m still hatless. It did the job nicely though it’s a bit big for me, at least I always put it on the right way round.

Good few days, back to Sapporo area tomorrow so most of the day o trains. Will be looking out for white tailed eagles & cranes.

SWMBO, the Planner in Chief, hasn’t quite gotten on to planning Tokyo yet. Will let you know once we have a plan in place.

Not a lot happening today, just a train day. Most exciting thing was watching 3 x F-15s take off from Chitose AB. Now watching Indi500 and it seems Japanese for crash is crash!!
