Ukraine

Great morning mooching around Phnom Penh. It’s a major festival here this w/end (unfortunately after we go to Kampot Big Cry Big Cry ) so all getting set up for long boat races and general festivities. The King is in town for the festival so a few road closure but nothing too bad.

Good walk down the tributary of the Mekong where the races are going on. Lots of barges with lights on them for the evenings. TBH happy to be in this part of the world in the warmup/setting up time. During the festivities it’s wall to wall peeps and you have no choice but to go with the flow. Far too many peeps for me, esp since in 2010 it didn’t work out well for over 300 of the crowd. Sad

And the first sign that there were races on the cards.

When they say long boats, they do indeed mean long boats. This lot went downstream light something possessed, needless to say they were a tad slower going upstream as the river was running pretty fast. Until they hit the grandstand where the King will be watching on Sunday, then they gave it some beans. Thumbs Up

Here’s one of the teams practising. Hate to think how fast they could get in the real thing. Thumbs Up

And away from the coast looking for a Metfone shop for data, was getting the shakes as no comms means chaos & confusion. Whistle Looks like they are stocking up on sugar cane to fuel the boat crews.

Armoured Deafner, looks BHS (brand harry spankers), love the holes for firing bullets/spraying pepper spray through.

Looks like the designer of the HCMC Mission Impossible building might have visited here. Whistle

And finally, some pics of tuctucs. No conventional taxis here, just tuctucs. We saw one last night with AstroTurf for a roof, obviously the green version. Whistle Some are ancient, lots BHS. The ancient ones are large enough for the driver to string up a hammock in. Love the new yellow ones, would love to take one home with me but they are just a little too big for cabin baggage. Whistle

Looks like little boys Chrimbo Pressie is sorted. Thumbs Up It’s above you. Whistle

Lovely day, 32c and not too humid. Getting back into keeping cool (AC in malls) & hydrated (his & hers water bottles), for the first time this trip had to use the Fac50. Thumbs Up

Saw that, and it’s snowing up north!!

Lots of temperature and sunshine here, if it didn’t take so much energy I’d get up and go for a refreshing dip. Pigeons like the pool! Shocked

Not long to go, and the rainy season is officially over. Well it is in Cambodia & Myanmar so should be the same in Thailand. Mind you the weather forecast on the Beeb, the one that does the whole planet in 90 seconds, did show a mahoooosive storm off VN heading W so it may be a wet start to the dry season. But, as a sticker on an old RR once proclaimed, a bad day at the beach (sic golf course) is still better than a good day at the office (sic home). Thumbs Up

A few pics from Cambodia’s Independence Day today, they threw off the shackles of French colonialism in 1953.

Always good on a river to watch the comings and goings, esp of ferries.

Even better when the ramp is only on the pier at one little point. No problem for the motos but made it more interesting for the car drivers who had to reverse off.

A few scenic pics from S side of the centre of PP.

A monument to Cambodian & Vietnamese friendship, plus marking the Vietnamese helping get rid of the Khmer Rouge, resulting in the Chinese invading parts of the newly reunified northern Vietnam. The Chinese have always had odd bed fellows and Pol Pot was one of them.

Statue of Chuon Nath, Patriarch Of Cambodia looking very splendid.

Bit of a contrast, oldie worldie Khmer buildings surrounded by glitzy casinos, the latter for the Chinese.

And the Cambodian Independence monument. In first pic behind the statue of Norodom Sihanouk.

And it’s been a while since any decent food pics have been posted, I know I must do better. Whistle

Beef Lak Lok (or is it Lok Lak Confused ) for me. Those dark green bits are bits of pepper vines, packing a fair bit of heat. Really scrummy, but beer deffo needed. Thumbs Up

And Hoisin Duck Noodles for SWMBO, also really tastie.

And then a walk to the river again to watch the boats get some practise in for the Water Festival this week. The place is filling up and vendors are jockeying for position to sell all sorts of tempting nibbles and delicacies. Shocked Shocked

Brings a whole new meaning to nice grub!

Then found another stall that took this food to a whole new level.

Deep fried Tarantula anyone?

Or a snake on a stick?

Plus a whole range of other nibbles.

We’re just happy with lunch above, plus a bottle of vino & some biscuits for supper. Thumbs Up

Waiting on the bus to Kampot, ironically in the Railway Station as the bus station is closed for the Water Festival.

Swanky airport train, it uses tracks in the normal road. Bit like a tram with attitude. Love the snow plough!! Laughing

SRT train (Thai Railways) train to the western border. We were going to do that but have booked the bus to Siem Riep as it’s a lot easier.

And an old steam relic rusting away. It’s 29c atm, imagine working the hot plate when it’s not this cool!!

A few more pics from wandering around the river area this morning.

Litter collection crew (student like) picking up rubbish and asking peeps to use the bins. Love the cardboard boat!! I think they thought this tourist had gone mad. Laughing

And a better view of PP’s Mission Impossible building in front of the railway station.

And finally an a advertising poster for a street barber. I doubt if I could get any of those any more. Big Cry Big Cry Big Cry

I thought dinosaur like until SWMBO poked its eye out. Whistle Whistle

It’s a lovely 30c here today, well outside the bus. Hopefully you’ll get similar for the golf. Thumbs Up
