Looking for some comments on this.
I was on holiday in Northumbria last week and heard a grinding noise coming occasionally from the rear of the car, particularly as I made a turn. As we had more than half a week left and no other car (and having been advised by my own indy not to drive it too far), I guessed it might be the bearing and so took it to a LR indy in the area. They checked it out and said that the tracking rods weren't tight - they tightened them up and checked the bearings. Whilst there was some wear, they said the car was safe to drive, but to get it checked out when I got back. They wouldn't ouch the bearing as it was clear that some work had been done recently (by my normal indy) and they didn't want to take on any liability if any of that work was sub-standard.
Got the car to my normal indy. He called me and said that even the slightest movement in the tracking rods would cause me great problems in steering and would not, in any event, make a grinding noise. He checked the rear wheel bearings and the driver's side bearing had collapsed - I did well, apparently, getting the car back to Glasgow from Northumbria.
Anyone any thoughts on this? I thought I'd done well finding a local indy in Northumbria, but if the advice was duff, maybe I hadn't done so well. My gut instinct is that my own garage gave me the right version of events, but I know next to nothing about what happens under the car.

Had the bearings been changed recently by your indi? What other work was done on the rear?

Nothing at the rear. A lot of repair work at front.
I'm really just interested in the diagnosis of the grinding noise being due to the tracking rods not being as tight as they should be. I was happy enough with that when I got the car back from the holiday place, but it is completely at odds with what my own guy told me.
Also slightly surprised that the collapsed rear bearing, which I am 99% confident caused the noise, wasn't identified by the Northumbrian garage. 2014 - D4 2010 HSE Nara Bronze

I would be inclined to believe your regular indi.
Loose rear track rods wouldn't make a grinding noise,
If loose at the ends (chassis or hub ends) I would maybe expect a Clunk if they were properly loose and some seriously suspect handling.
If it was a loose back nut on the rod adjustment (have you recently had a 4 wheel alignment?) then you wouldn't hear anything.
A collapsed bearing would certainly be grinding. Stu

I agree. The worn wheel bearing should have been picked up by the first garage. The clue for me was the grinding noise that came and went when cornering as that points to a noisy wheel bearing that gets noisy as the loading on it increases when cornering. It can be difficult sometimes to pinpoint exactly which wheel has the issue as sometimes a noise you think is coming from the rear is actually coming from the front! You did well to make it home as I had a wheel bearing go on a trailer completely within a few miles. I had checked the bearings were not hot when stopping for fuel at Lesmahagow but then just turning onto the M8 from the M74 at Baillieston noticed smoke coming from the N/S trailer wheel. By the time I pulled onto the hard shoulder the bearings had completely collapsed and the wheel was rubbing on the chassis!

A slightly worn bearing can go from slightly worn to completely  in not many miles at all
The other garage did identify a worn bearing, but declined to replace
You chose to drive 150 miles knowing there was play in a bearing

I am far from knowledgeable about these things, but I was told by my indy that any play in the traction rods would have been very evident in the steering, and that the play would not make a grinding noise.
To be honest, I am just looking to understand which explanation is more plausible (have not heard the grinding since having the bearing replaced a few days ago). Could the tracking rods make that noise?
I'm not looking to point fingers or lay blame at anyone's door, just curious. 2014 - D4 2010 HSE Nara Bronze
