What Harmon Kardon amp do I need?

Looking to upgrade my 2012 LR4 Low line sound system to either the high line or Logic 7 system.

The problem I have is identifying a suitable amplifier. Quite a few seem available with High line ones being around the £100 mark and Logic 7 £250 odd, however the parts numbers vary for amps that look physically identical and wondered if there was some way to determine ones that would be suitable?

The Harmon Kardon amplifier that I have been looking at is part AH42-19C164-BB. Now having a look at the Black Box Solutions MSV2 detail for programming amplifiers this one is not included for my year LR4 2012 so unsure if it will be any good?

Very interested in this, as well. In the US, and was wondering if the Logic7 amp could be plugged in directly and replace the standard H/K amp for improved sound?

Still getting the bits together from upgrade on LR4 from Basic sound system to HK Logic 7. But have uploaded some pictures of the amp I will use initially to get me going which is a Logic 7 part XQK500106 from I was told is from an LR3.

Also put a few schematics in gallery of LR4 base and Hi line system with descriptions which might be of some use to you.

One thing I have noticed so far is that the LR3 audio for HK 7 appears to have different electrical connections. When I get a few minutes will confirm differences and post on-site with LR3 schematic.

Have a read of this Post jack 2006

http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/post1143915.html#1143915

This explains the two systems used by LR and although there are MY specific distinctions made in this Post it may not be as clear cut as that and as such you will really need to look where your amp is located to know which system you have and which kind of Amp you need.

Hey Jack - I looked at the low-line schematics, and it doesn't show the amplifier I have under drivers seat. Mine is a March build 2011 Disco4 with low-line.

Hey Jack - I looked at the low-line schematics, and it doesn't show the amplifier I have under drivers seat. Mine is a March build 2011 Disco4 with low-line.

From what I have managed to piece together there are quite a few versions of the sound system for LR4. The base system that I have has the amplifier built into the module that carries the CD drive. this unit also handles the DAB and general AM/FM radio functions with a basic LCD display. The next version up uses the system that I think you have where the amplifier is mounted remote (under the drivers seat in your case) and I guess must use the MOST optic fibre links? The next version is the Logic 7 with increased power output that from schematics etc shows it initially under the seat in 2011 but moving to rear drivers quarter panel along with DAB unit etc on 2012 onwards.

So to give you an idea where my upgrade system will be after this weekend now I have most of the bits:-

Original basic LCD display removed and LR4 Touchscreen display CH22 14F667 AE fitted

Integrated basic single CD/AM/FM Radio/DAB removed and Integrated module fitted BF6N 18C815-HG fitted which has CD but with HD drive so pseudo 10 CD's possible and NAV (but doubt if I will use this).

DAB module that has been mounted in drivers side rear quarter area.

Unfortunatly the only Logic 7 amp I can get at the moment is part ref XQK500105 AUD 4L and that's out of a LR3 system. Sifting through the LR Topix document it seems this might have been used on early LR4 with the Touchscreen and IAM that I am intending to use so fingers crossed it will work.

Intially I intend to give the LR3 Harmon Kardon Logic 7 amp a go and see if I can get all of the bits to talk to each other on MOST system. The tweeters will go through the respective Focal crossovers with this amp unless I get lucky and see the later LR4 HK Logic 7 pop up for sale.

Update on installation.

Touchscreen is nice, blue-tooth to phone obtains link, Nav unit fires up and shows pre-stored waypoints etc, 4-wheel drive info etc

Thanks for link which I have read through.

My LR4 had the base system so no external amp was fitted. Similar to what you have carried out I have fitted the Touchscreen and IAM from 2012 LR4 with required wiring and wired speakers etc back to the drivers side rear quarter.

Having tried my amp which came from a LR3 without success I having been looking at the specs for amps. The rear mounted one is significantly physically different with regard to connectors for both the High Line and Logic 7 amp.

Looking on Ebay there seems to be quite a few High line ones knocking around for RR Sport and Jaguar. I am guessing that I will have to go for the later amp but question is would a Jaguar amp be ok assuming it would need to have its firmware changed to be recognised by the recently installed LR4 system.

Next question is LR quote 11 speakers for the high line and 17 for Logic 7. The schematics I got from Topix web site show the high line as having 14 speakers and no schematic for Logic 7??

Amplifier specs - update on progress

Looking on this site, Topix and others have come to the conclusion that the following external amps could be used on LR4:-

High-Line AUD3-12 BJ32-19C164AF - seen as LR4 fit
High-Line Aud3-12 BJ32-19C164-AE - seen as Jaguar XF around 2011 onwards
Premium AUD3-16 CH32-19C164-BC - seen as LR4 HSE spec 2011 onwards

and perhaps others......

Looking at the AUD-12 and AUD-16 I think this refers to channels so 12 = 12 channels and 16 = 16 channels?

At the moment I still have the LR3 Logic 7 plugged in that does not output sound, so not much use I guess as an amplifier! So got AUD3-16 CH32-19C164-BC on order and hope that I will be able to get this to work.....

One thing I have found (obvious I guess) is that the amps on MOST bus are programmable via firmware up-grades. Again a guess, but looking at the LR4 and Jag part number, which are subtle different, it could be that the sound settings between the Jaguar and Discovery are different?, so firmware to amp includes compensation for the sound effects/speakers within respective vehicles.

Just a guess and hope I am right and my replacement amp actually does something because its base firmware will allow it to communicate with the IAM module.

Update on amplifier:-

Tried PREMIUM 16 from a 2012 Jag XF ref BJ32-19C164-BF AUD3 and it was not recognised .

The next amp I tried was from HSE 2011 ref CH32-19C164-BC AUD-16 and this came up initially as Logic 7 on touchscreen display. Obtained sound for mobile phone when linked through Blue-tooth and also reverse warning sound. So guess amp is working........

Update on audio

Attached via Bluetooth HTC phone with music files (touchscreen selected bluetooth) and managed to play and select (quite basic) music files. No display of track data so tried USB connection. This did not work but read later that HTC needs to be set to Hard disk, so will try that tomorrow....

Update on audio 2

Ripped some CD's onto a USB stick as MP3 files and Audio on the USB works fine, well chuffed.

The HK amp from HSE works fine and also get the Logic 7 pop up in Audio settings menu. Wired up the DAB module and that now appears on the Touchscreen, just got to sort the aerials now but think this will be ok.

Hiya Jack
I must apologize that i seem to have gotten a bit behind with this thread and
the developments and progress you have made since i last visited, and of course my input to the questions you have posted up.

I am repeatedly re reading what you have posted and trying to get my head around what you initially had in your 2012 D4 as well as what you have already done and found to work and not.
And i for one am very interested to read what you have written.

I already see a few aspects that seem not quite right and i may be able to help you with.

For Example, In Amp Part Numbers you quote

Quote:

High-Line AUD3-12 BJ32-19C164AF - seen as LR4 fit
High-Line Aud3-12 BJ32-19C164-AE - seen as Jaguar XF around 2011 onwards
Premium AUD3-16 CH32-19C164-BC - seen as LR4 HSE spec 2011 onwards

On a Disco 3, high line Amps were all AUD2 and logic 7 was AUD4 and part numbers for these were all traditional LR types of three letters followed by 6 digits.

On a Disco 4, it seems that all Amps are AUD3-XX where XX does indeed indicate how many outputs the AMP has.

however the part numbers for these are now 4-6-2 Ford Type, which if you know how to decode them actually gives a bit more information about the part.

The first letter, denotes the year the item was first developed and introduced. A = 2010, B = 2011 C = 2012 and so on.

The next 2 denote the vehicle brand or chassis it was introduced for. Land Rovers are typically H? and Jaguars J? or X?

The 4th digit is the deparment resposible, with 2 signifying the electrical / electronics department.

The 6 digits in the middle are just what the item is.

The first of the latter 2 are for variants in the hardware and you will hopefully note that 12 Channel amps are all A and the 16 channel versions all B.

The last digit denotes the software version programmed into the hardware.

I hope this helps you.

As i have said it will take me a while to get my head round where you are at and so possibly be able to help more but in the meantime i note your last comment.

Fit Sat Nav aerial in rear stop lamp housing

I believe that the GPS antennea on the D4, possibly all of them and not just the 2012 on models is now housed on the front dash instead of the High level Brake light

Hi Colin,

Thanks for information re amps. The amp from the 2011 plate HSE is the one I now have fitted and it works fine.

Unfortunately the premium amplifier from the 2012 plate Jag XF did not work but wondered if that was due to wrong firmware? Its not a problem now but just curious.

Arrgh wished I had known about sat nav aerial being moved to dash area. After lots of pondering and having a bash at removing the rear high level stop light I gave up, could not even start to cut the bonding.

Cheers,

Jack
