HDC down icy hill?
Hello all
Last Winter I had to drive in some icy conditions on one night. There is a lengthy downhill run coming into the town I live in and my scorpion zeros did not give me any confidence . I need some advice on HDC in case the same happens this year.
I contemplated using HDC on this icy hill, but chose not to and apply the brake manually as I could control the brake myself rather than it being applied automatically for me. What is the considered opinion on using HDC on an icy 400m run downhill? Gradient varies , not excessive but not a gentle incline (makes you puff walking up it).

What speed were you doing at the time? This will have very significant influence on the HDC behavior as it would in normal driving mode!yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

HDC is MUCH better than you are using your footbrake.
It adjusts the braking to each wheel independently as needed and stops you skidding off into the scenery.
If you apply the brakes you apply them all at the same time and although you have ABS the HDC computer does it far better.

I came down something really steep when it was icy last year and we had all the snow. To the point i didn't want to drive down it at all, but the road was blocked at the top with a 6ft snow drift, so i had no choice. I shouldn't have listened to Google Maps when in the Cotswolds and bad snow!
Anyway, i used low range, locked in gear, HDC and controlled the speed with the foot brake as well. Whatever you do, you need to be very smooth so you don't lose grip in the first place.
It was a long straight steep steep hill. Car never struggled. I was on GG AT

Remember you can control the hdc speed with the cruise control buttons. .

All you have to do is go on the LR Experience course and they demonstrate exactly how it works. .

I used HDC on my D3 to go down a steep hill that was virtually sheet ice. I had the original fit Pirelli Zero’s on. I used the CC to set HDC to the lowest possible speed and kept everything crossed.
It was amazing, totally effortless. 2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

Ultimately, gravity is king, so when you are sitting your 2.7 tonne box...never forget that. HDC and steering can always be lost on ice or other slippery surfaces as I have found to my cost
Primary considerations for me would be...
a/ tyres, as Ken says ...winters make such a difference on ice\snow.
b/ steepness and run out ...once you are committed where are you going to go if it all goes pear shaped ? off the edge of a cliff ...or a nice sized verge. If in doubt ...get out and assess.
c/ is there another way?

I did have a snow covered verge that I might have been able to stop on if it had gone pear shaped.
It was my first winter in the D3 and I was pretty nervous, but it crawled down with no drama. I’ll never forget it. 2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

Yes that hill descent ...the one where the tree saved me
isn't it the best practice to actually go a bit faster on an icy slope so that you retain come control? if you go too slow, you might end up just sliding around?--
