Recently noticed that the front screen heater is only staying on for a couple of minutes whereas the rear one remains on a lot longer. Any suggestions as to what needs checking etc

The heated screen generally runs for a shorter time than the rear. Mine does and also had many previous Fords that do the same. 2006 TdV6 HSE.

generally they only need to run for 4 minutes.

I normally push the top of the three buttons which switches on all three functions at once and am pretty sure the heated screen stays on for longer than 4 minutes activated this way.

There is a comparison between D3 and D4 here! - the D4 probably stays on less because it comes on automatically when outside temp is below 5c on start up
Heated screens use a lot of current so the less time they are on the better for the battery. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

If the battery is getting low, maybe the car turns off some electrical functions to help it charge, is the battery in good condition.

There is a load shedding function if the alternator cannot supply enough current or the battery is low and needs a good charge . Having said that it needs lot of load such as all the lights ,seats front & rear etc ,to load the alt. to max.

Just done a check on my D4.
After turning both on:-
Front screen turned off after 2 minutes.
Rear screen turned off after 4 minutes.
Both give or take a few seconds

Yes, even the D3 does this. For screens and heated seats.
However when this operates, the dash light stays on, and it turns the heater off without you knowing
It is cleaver enough to remember to stop the count down timer when it has turned it off, so you still get the full heating time.
Therefore : Those reporting very long on times, it could be because you have lots of other things turned on, or battery is low. or engine is on idle.
Ref D4 - 4 mins for a rear screen is a massive step change
