How the hell did this happen?

Although this relates to my daughter’s Freelander 2 I have posted this on here as this relates to 19 inch Land Rover wheels...

Daughter had been complaining of vibration whilst driving over 65mph.. took the car out and sure enough there was a considerable vibration over 65-70mph but smooth as silk at any speed less than that!
It actually felt like a damper vibration shaking through the whole car...

Reviewed posts on the FL2 forum which seemed to indicate either failed propshaft or a failed haldex unit..

Drat I thought, so to identify which it was I swapped the wheels about and moved front to back etc..

This actually made it worse with now severe shaking of the steering wheel! So thinking it may have been down to balancing took them to be rebalanced!

Again no better after this so presumed it was a delaminating tyre or somesuch so now ordered a pair of new front tyres...

This morning took the car to the tyre fitters only to discover this!,,,

The whole inside of one tyre was full of water!

She does not off road ( other than a muddy horse field ) the tyre has never lost air, has never been reinflated from new and always maintained pressure...has only started doing this in the last couple of weeks...always has a secured valve cap protecting it , never had a puncture etc etc...

Fitted the new tyres and she now drives like a dream! Wtf! Shocked

Either it's something malicious or the water is getting forced in if it goes from being warm on the road to a cold puddle or something. Is there a puddle that they drive through in the field when they arrive?

It could be something similar to an axle breather or gearbox breather where they can suck water in through seals if they aren't working. If you imagine the air and tyre warm up then get dunked in cold water and it contracts the air inside and it can suck water into it.

I've seen water drawn into an ecu through the centre of wires and a sealed connector.

Who knows...this has only recently started after this real wet weather over the last six weeks...

We don’t use a pressure washer, it’s not from water at the bottom of a compressor when blowing the tyres up, the valve covers are new and secured correctly...etc etc

The only reason it started vibrating at speed is the water was remaining at the bottom of the tyre at lower speeds...presumably over 70mph the water must start cavitating and bouncing around giving the effect it did! There must have been at least a kilo of water in the bottom of the tyre when we took it off...

However it never lost pressure!

The only thing I can imagine is a slight puncture which the rubber seals itself inside.. yet on the motorway when it’s raining hydraulic pressure is forcing the water up the treads and into the tyre...
The pressure inside is closing the hole and effectively sealing the tyre again acting in the same way as a valve...that is the only thing I can think of! Shocked

Could be at some time the tyres were pumped up with a compressor without a water seperator fitted.
I once went to pump mine up at a filling station & before attaching the hose to the valve pressed the trigger,it absolutely spewed water out for a good 30 seconds before air come out... Shocked

Has your daughter had a recent anniversary, celebration or any other activity or achievement?
Few years ago my apprentice got married, as a typical prank his colleagues removed the chrome hubcap discs from one wheel and put a handful of 16mm hexagon nuts inside, it took him 4 months to find what was causing the low speed rattle. Twisted Evil
It’s very easy to put water in tyres with a hosepipe, there is no other way water can get into a pressurised tyre except through the valve Thumbs Up
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

I agree with all of your thoughts but the short answer is no....
She is very meticulous re anything like this and tells me re faults with car..

I check the air pressures regularly and we’ve never had to touch these tyres... they were all a matching set fitted new and as I say this has only been in the last couple of weeks...

Bizarre! Shocked

Most bizarre, but I agree with the above M3DPO the only way that has got in there is through the valve. The slightest imperfection in the bead seal would see the air coming out first.

Only possible way that water can get in is via the valve on a pressurised tyre. If the tyre was flat then possibly through the
bead.

I would have thought that the laws of centrifugal motion would even out any water in the tyre when driven, and you would never know. However when it freezes, all of a sudden you have a great big weight on the bottom of the tyre, causing a big shake.

Was it freezing when she noticed this?

Was the previous owner ie a farmer who has ballasted the tyre like they some do Question

If he had as daft as it is on a car, have thought he would have put more in.

Just asking. Was there a reason you were asking about 19 inch wheels? Unless I missed it the size was not subsequently mentioned. Lots of good suggestions on here as usual. Thumbs Up

Are you at a livery yard? Green eyed monsters can do funny things.

You don't mention how long you've had the car or if from new but I would guess if no air has been added it's been like that for a while. Have you had any work done at a garage lately? (possible tyre swap)

Without adding air there is no possible way to get water into the tyre. If the pressure was right then the water has been there since the tyre went on the rim.

No to all of the above....
I bought the tyres 12 months ago.. four brand new Pirelli Verde All Season tyres. They were fitted by a great friend of mine who is a genuine professional tyre fitter. Throughout the year they have been perfect..no issues whatsoever

They have only caused problems in the last couple of weeks... she tells me she has not used a tyre inflator at a petrol station...they have never had issues with pressures...

I wash the car and not with a pressure washer....

The valve caps are original and untouched...

Yes we are on a livery yard but we are the only ones there...

The car is parked facing the house under the gaze of Cctv...

As Toyah states ‘it’s a mystery’!
