Not having a good time with the D3 at present - lots of things failing all at once, its falling apart on me
Latest problem is I have a fluid leak under the car which does not look good - clear golden brown dripping from front offside as image shows, its not engine oil as its too clean and is not that viscous. I have complained about rough transmission for months now but LR say nothing wrong but could be something else??
What's behind the protection plate that could be causing this - life threatening or driveable but get fixed soonest
Any help much appreciated folks

Whats it smell like, pungent then its Diff oil/gear oil. Sweet smell then its coolant. Behind that plate is the transmission and drive shafts, so i suspect a gasket is letting go
Not pungent/foul smell - so guess is the sweet stuff!!!, coolant for what then?
If its Tranmission/Gear Oil could be related to my on going moan bowt rough transmission - driveable in your opinion?
need this like a hole in the head right now given other issues

I would unbolt the plate TBH, it will give a clearer idea where its coming from. If its coolant it could be any pipe, clip, or even the EGR cooler, have you checked the coolant level?
PM Disco Mikey, I think he will be more help once given a rough idea where its coming from, and that does mean unbolt the plate I am afraid. Doesnt need removing, just remove all bolts except thr last one, which you loosten enough to swing the plate away

I thing the transmission can be accessed under that plate too, maybe its the fault especially when you say you have issues there.
A few have had shaft seals replaced, think Nodosh had this done.
Well that eliminates one thing as I drive a manual - phew!!!!.....

EGR cooler will cause a big loss of coolant on a short trip, RONP had this recently, and is why I asked hows your level. TBH, I would look towards a seal in the transmission side of things.
Still could be gear oil though, but that does stink, and you would know that
Nope - whats that all about, might have missed something as been mega busy workwise

Ronp was the last man i knew that had EGR cooler failure, so a pm to him for clues i guess. You would know its coolant by the colour

We had something similar a while ago. For several days, when we parked the D3 on the drive, the next morning we would find an oily spot under that protection plate. We thought that it was a leak and feared the worst, but after a few days it dried and we've seen nothing since. That was months ago and all is well with the car. I'm guessing it was down to water from a ford or from one of my sessions washing out the intercooler.
I'm not suggesting you ignore what you've seen, but it might not be so bad. Good luck.
