HELP! Steering upper column knock, not the usual suspects! |
|
I purchased a used LR Disc0 3 (07) from a dealer the other week and they have had it for the best part of a week trying to fix a problem but keeping on giving me it back with it!
There is a knock that can be felt and heard when you turn the steering wheel just to left of top dead center. It feels like it is coming from the area where the steering wheel meets the upper column. The steering lock and steering column adjuster have an effect on the knock.
The lower column, tie rods and other bushes/arms have been replaced as well as the steering cartridge I've been told but the knock is still there. It certainly feels like a mechanical knock in the upper column or module just below the cowl in front of the instruments. You can't hear the knock outside, it's not felt anywhere else and bumps make no difference?
My gut feel is it's the upper steering column bearing or module that is just inside. Or even the steering lock solenoid not disengaging correctly. The lock comes on in the exact spot where the knock is and it locks to the left, opposite of the car I've got at the moment on loan.
It's really frustrating as every time I go in to collect the car - twice yesterday, I've been told it's been fixed but it's still there!
I've involved the dealer principal now in an attempt to get it fixed as if it is not I'll just have to hand the car back which I don't want to as the rest of it is very good!
Any help please??

Hi,
Not certain, but could it be that the steering column lock pin is not retracting properly? If so, can probably be fixed by replacing the ignition barrel.

That's what I said to them on day one but they have done everything but that and haven't raised a technical help request until I got LR involved.
Have you had a similar experience or know of somebody who has with the ignition module?
The dealer is replacing the steering column on Monday but I still suspect it is the steering lock pin! They have replaced everything and finally after a week of me telling them the noise was coming from just under the steering boss they finally said they agree!!
Not a great first LR experience. Hope it gets better than this

I had a very similar sounding noise when I swapped my steering wheel over, it was to do with the parts inside the boss that deal with the steering wheel controls. Took the wheel off, gave everything a bit of a 'shake and a wiggle' put it back on (twice ); irritating clunky knock gone. Might be worth asking them to whip the wheel off and check to make sure everything is seated properly? and theeeeennn......???

Unnecessary quote removed
They replaced the cartridge the other day to no avail so I guess they may have done that. Everything I suggested wasn't looked at til Friday. Very frustrating!

Just reading this post about a problem a dealer not being able to sort out and them not "raising a technical help request". My Disco 3 has been into the dealers on several occasion's for a noise I think is related to the gearbox, but they have tried everything including blaming it on loose trim. Do I understand that they raise this technical help if they are unable to diagnose a problem?
Thanks

After I got LR involved they told the dealer to request technical help which I believe they can do at any time.

Hi Steve,
Not on my D3, but on an earlier vehicle.

Not there. I'm due it back tomorrow with a new upper steering column. I'll let you know if that's the fault....
